GREENVILLE, S.C. - North Florida volleyball displayed a dominant performance in a four-set victory, defeating Alabama State, 3-1, in its final match at the Furman Invite on Saturday afternoon at Alley Gymnasium.
The Ospreys started hot in the first two sets with a 25-20, 25-21 victories. Alabama came within one set of North Florida with a 25-20 win in set two. UNF mustered a gritty performance in the fourth and final set with a 27-25 victory.
UNF 3, ASU 1 (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25)
Set 1: Two kills apiece from Doctor and Piester helped North Florida jump out to a 6-5 lead. Two more kills from Piester extended the Ospreys' edge to 19-15. Doctor was sensational at the net on the final point with a solo block to seal the 25-20 win.
Set 2: A 5-2 run fueled by an ace from McFall allowed North Florida to command a 9-8 lead amid the set. Two kills from Bowers in three points put the Ospreys ahead 17-15. Francis Garay and Kazmierski each tallied kills for North Florida's final two points to earn the 25-21 victory.
Set 3: Looking for the sweep, North Florida was prolific through the majority of set three, as three kills from Francis Garay and a pair from Piester gave the Ospreys a 17-12 lead. However, Alabama State responded with a 13-3 run to earn the set win.
Set 4: Facing a 22-14 deficit, North Florida showed relentless fight with a 6-0 run capped off by a kill from Bowers. With the score knotted a 25, the Ospreys took the final two points with a kill by freshman middle blocker Katelyn Bowman and a block assist from Dawson and McFall, bringing the match to its final margin.
