TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Florida baseball (10-6) started off their road trip with a high-scoring victory against FAMU (5-12) on Tuesday afternoon.
UNF turned a slow start into a midweek victory by scoring seven runs in the eighth inning to win, 11-8. The Ospreys won their second midweek game of the season and their 30th in program history against the Rattlers.
Ospreys' starter
Brett Dennis escaped the first inning, stranding a runner in scoring position. After a scoreless second, Dennis was replaced by
Avery Love. Love would allow two runs, the first on a sac bunt and the second on a double by Broedy Poppell.
The Rattlers would add their third run of the game off of
Will Ohme in the fifth. The Osprey bats were stifled through six innings, as Dallas Tease and Andrew Ginther combined to throw six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits.
The UNF offense woke up in the seventh.
Alex Rodriguez got the party started with an RBI double.
Eric Fouraker would drive in a run on sac fly, but the big blow of the inning was a
Cherokee Nichols two RBI triple.
The bats continued to do damage in the eighth. The inning began with UNF taking advantage of Rattler mistakes. Nichols and
Cade Bush each picked up an RBI on a walk and
Tripp McKinlay added one on a hit by pitch.
Tyler Gerteisen would bring home two, hitting a single through the right side.
Matthew Clements would then deliver the sixth and seventh run of the inning on a two-run double to the gap.
The game seemed to be out of reach, yet the Rattlers continued to battle back. An error brought in FAMU's fourth run of the game. The error also loaded the bases and led to a Troy Fontenot grand slam.
Kaden Humphrey would finish the inning off, limiting the damage.
UNF put two runners on base in the ninth, but a double play ended the Osprey threat.
Lance Bolton retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, securing an 11-8 UNF victory.
