JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's tennis (1-2) tasted victory for the first time this season, as they defeated South Carolina State (0-2), 5-2, to open up at home on Saturday afternoon at UNF Tennis Complex.
UNF started off strong by sweeping the doubles point, powered by the make-shift partnership of
Jonas Hartenstein and
Andreas Scott winning, 6-3. The doubles point was then secured by
Juan Pablo Cenoz and
PJ Kotan for the Ospreys by winning 6-4, leaving the final court unfinished.
A couple of medical retirements got our singles play underway with Kotan registering a win for UNF after his opponent could not continue. On the other side, Cenoz was not able to continue in his match due to a retirement of his own in the first set. This left the Ospreys up, 2-1, at the time with all still to play for on the other four courts.
Three of the four remaining Ospreys won their matches in two sets, one of which was freshman
Chase Healey, who made his collegiate debut. He earned a pair of wins in both his singles and doubles matches on the day.
The Ospreys travel to Starkville, Miss., to face off against Mississippi State on Friday, Feb. 9, before taking on VCU the next day as a neutral site contest on Saturday, Feb. 10.
