Baseball Drops Pitcher’s Duel in Heartbreaking Fashion, 2-1

Madonna Spins Eight-Innings of Two-Run Ball Despite Loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Righty Dominick Madonna was masterful on the mound, spinning eight innings and earning his second complete game of the season, but North Florida (28-26, 13-16 ASUN) was narrowly clipped by JU's own nine-inning complete game effort in a 2-1 pitcher's duel loss Friday, May 19.

For the second time in the series, UNF scored first but two two-out runs from JU (32-22, 16-13 ASUN) in the fourth was all the scoring the game would see as an unfortunate lineout-double play capped the game in the ninth.

North Florida's postseason hopes still remain with a win and some help. The Ospreys would need to win, Austin Peay would need to lose its game against North Alabama and Central Arkansas or Kennesaw State would need would to win to force a three-way or four-way tiebreaker. UNF would win the three-way or four-way tiebreaker due to RPI rankings, although Austin Peay would win the head-to-head tiebreaker due to head-to-head competition. This scenario would hold should UNF finish the regular season with a higher RPI than any of the teams bound in the potential three-way or four-way tie.

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF had a great opportunity in the first. Aidan Sweatt dropped in a single, Jakob Runnels ripped a base hit back up the box and Alex Lodise walked. JU was able to roll a double play on a sharply hit ball from Cade Reich that was turned for a 4-6-3 double play.
  • The double play hurt the hosts in the second. With runners at first and second to start the frame, Madonna spun a 4-6-3 double play on a 2-0 count and then got another groundout.
  • UNF took a 1-0 lead in the third. With one away, Austin Brinling was hit by a pitch, Sweatt doubled off the chalk down the left field line and Runnels hit a deep sac fly to center.
  • JU threatened with two on and two out in the third and Kris Armstrong batting, but Madonna got him to lineout to Drew Leinenbach in right.
  • Jacksonville strung together three two-out hits including a triple from Tommy Joseph to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
  • Madonna pulled off a magical escape effort in the seventh. After the first two batters reached, the righty got one on a sac bunt before responding with a punchout with the infield in and then a groundout.
  • North Florida got a runner in to start the ninth. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Peyton Sybrandt ripped a liner to first but it was caught before JU pulled off the double play with force out at first.
