Osprey Bats Stuff the Box Score in Saturday Split at EKU

North Florida Upended in Continued Game, Ospreys Belt Five Homers in Night Cap

RICHMOND, Ky. - UNF baseball stuffed the box score with record-setting numbers as the Ospreys (15-12, 4-4 ASUN) erased two five-run deficits in a 19-11 win Saturday, helping North Florida split the day's decisions after EKU (11-16, 2-6 ASUN) won the continuation of Friday's game thanks to a late comeback.

North Florida erupted for consecutive seven-run innings, scoring all 19 runs via an RBI thanks to 17 hits. Five of those hits were home runs, with two being grand slams as the Ospreys have hit three grand slams in two games. Dating back to last Saturday, UNF has hit four grand slams in four games.

Alex Lodise caused fits for EKU pitching, going 5-for-6 in the second game, tying the North Florida DI-era single game hits record thanks to three doubles, a home run and a single. His home run gave him 10 on the year, setting the North Florida freshman single season roundtripper record.

Five Ospreys had multi-hit games in the nightcap, with six posting multi-RBI contests, paced by Austin Brinling's five RBI day that included a grand slam. Jakob Runnels accounted for the other grand slam Saturday, belting one in the sixth just one inning after Brinling's in the fifth.

North Florida combined for 33 hits and eight home runs over the first two games of this series. The Ospreys can go for their sixth series victory of the year with a win tomorrow.

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF was out to the early lead, scoring twice in the first when Aidan Sweatt and Austin Brinling pulled off the double steal. Lodise doubled to left center, scoring Brinling.
  • A throwing error on a fielder's choice during an attempt to turn two allowed the Colonels Logan Thomason to score from first.
  • Sweatt picked up the second of his four hits with an RBI double in the second, but EKU's Will King quickly tied it back up with a two-run home run.
  • In his first game since March 4, Nichols launched a home run to left, igniting an 8-0 stretch for UNF.
  • North Florida's four-run fifth came together due to a Runnels sac fly, Lodise two-RBI single and Drew Leinenbach single back up the box.
  • Four more came across in the sixth, but this time thanks to one swing as Runnels' unbelievable stretch persisted with a grand slam.
  • EKU showed life with its own four-run sixth
  • UNF seemingly snatched away any EKU momentum when Leinenbach hit the first homer of his career with a shot to left in the seventh.
  • Rain arrived in the eighth as play was suspended and pushed to be continued at 5 p.m. Saturday.
  • When play was resumed, a three-run home run, two-run home run and go-ahead two-RBI single gave EKU the 15-13 advantage and win.
