Late Surge Not Enough in Sunday Slugfest With Fairfield

Ospreys Scored 10 Runs Between Sixth and Eighth, But Fall, 17-13

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UNF baseball put up crooked numbers in frames six through eight, but Fairfield's early lead was too much to overcome as the Ospreys' (10-7) comeback attempt came up short in a Sunday slugfest with Fairfield, 17-13, March 12.

Blake Pound and Jakob Runnels both had multi-RBI home runs in the loss, bringing North Florida to six-straight games with at least one home run. The late long balls nearly lifted UNF to an unprecedented comeback as the Ospreys once trailed by as much as 13-1.

The Stags (6-6) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never relinquished the lead despite North Florida still emerging with the series win.

  • Alex Lodise laced a single to left, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch in the second.
  • Fairfield hit two home runs in the third, one of which was a three-run home run as the Stags posted a six-run inning in the third.
  • A two-run home run, solo home run and RBI triple gave Fairfield a 13-1 lead after three and a half innings.
  • Blake Pound turned on an inside fastball for his second two-run home run in as many days, scoring Drew Leinenbach in the fourth.
  • A miscue on a relay throw back into the infield on a fly out allowed Fairfield to score another in the fifth.
  • UNF inched closer in the sixth, getting three runs, two of which came on a first-pitch two-RBI double down the right field line off Fletcher Cline's bat. He came around to score after a pair of wild pitches.
  • The Stags hooked a two-run line drive homer inside the right field pole and rolled an RBI single through the left side, making it 17-6 Stags in the seventh.
  • A Leinenbach RBI double and Cade Reich infield-RBI single highlighted UNF's four-run seventh. Three walks, a passed ball, two wild pitches and a fielding error also contributed to the production.
  • Jakob Runnels launched a pinch-hit three-run home run to left in the eighth, bringing the Ospreys within four.
  • Reich put down a leadoff bunt single to open the ninth, but Fairfield buckled down to get the next three batters.
