Record Performances Key Baseball's Doubleheader Sweep of Fairfield

Lodise Scores Five and Sybrandt Drives in Six in Night Cap, Halstead Post Two Saves

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Peter Holden fanned nine in a 6-4 game-one win and the UNF bats unloaded for 19 hits in the nightcap as North Florida baseball (10-6) swept a Saturday doubleheader against Fairfield (5-6) March 11.

The Ospreys clinched the weekend series with the results from Saturday, giving North Florida four-straight weekend series wins for the year. Alex Lodise scored five runs in the second game, tying a UNF DI-era single-game record. Peyton Sybrandt provided six RBI in the second game, the most by an Osprey since 2016 as UNF posted a double-digit scoring effort for the fourth time this season.

Righty Stephen Halstead earned career-save number 10 and 11 over Saturday, closing out both games of the twin bill. He has five through ten UNF wins this season.

Behind the Line Score
  • Peter Holden got the first eight batters he faced, but consecutive fielding errors put two on for Fairfield in the third. Holden picked off the runner at first, but an extended rundown allowed the Stags runner at third to score before the out was recorded.
  • Fairfield's Mike Becchetti tucked a high breaking ball inside the left field foul pole for a solo home run in the fourth.
  • Austin Brinling and Lodise singled in the 4th, but Fairfield center fielder Ryan Strollo made a nice running play on a Dallen Leach liner to end the inning.
  • Strollo came up to start the fifth and hit a solo homer to right center.
  • UNF tied it up at three with a three-run fifth. A leadoff walk, hot grounder through the left side, bunt single and an RBI fielder's choice from Austin Brinling got UNF on the board. With two strikes and two away, Jakob Runnels delivered a two-RBI single to right center. Brinling's speed was crucial in extending the inning, allowing Runnels the chance to bat.
  • Two-out production gave UNF the lead in the sixth, its first of the game. With two outs, Reich walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and slid home safely under the tag after Matthew Clements provided an RBI single to right.
  • Two big insurance runs came across in the seventh courtesy of a towering two-run home run off the top of the batting facility in left.
  • Becchetti hit his second solo home run of the game in the eighth, but Lance Bolton limited further damage by fanning the side.
  • Halstead secured the ninth inning, earning the fourth save on the year for the righty.

Behind the Line Score
  • Fairfield plated three two-out runs in the first inning, using two walks, a single to right and a two-run triple.
  • UNF bounced back to put up two in the second. Pound singled through the left side, Lodise reached on a fielding error and Sybrandt doubled to left center. With two outs, Drew Leinenbach legged out an infield single to score Lodise.
  • Fairfield pushed its lead back to three with an opposite field two-run home run from Charlie Pagliarini in the third.
  • Sybrandt made Fairfield pay again, belting a three-run home run to the trees in right, scoring Lodise and Brinling once more.
  • Fairfield benefited from a sun ball in right and a sac fly to regain the lead, 6-5, in the fourth.
  • UNF's second three-run home run of the game and Runnels' third home run in three games was a go-ahead three-run shot on a hanging curve to left center in the fourth.
  • The crooked numbers continued in the fifth when Leinenbach plated two with a flare to right center and Sweatt added another with a double sliced down the right field line
  • Fairfield's Griffin Watson homered to left as the Stags cut their deficit to 11-8 in the sixth.
  • Lodise's scorching hot bat came through with another two-run home run to left center in the sixth, erasing Fairfield's progress from the top half of the inning.
  • Fairfield found two-out magic in the seventh, scoring five with two outs thanks to a two-out two-run double, two wild pitches and a fielding error.
  • It was Lodise to come through again in the seventh, doubling in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. One batter later, Sybrandt posted RBI five and six on the game with a gapper to left center.
  • Fairfield was left scoreless over the final two frames thanks to shut down work from Halstead.
