KINGSTON, JAMAICA - Between time coaching the UNF men's tennis program in season and all of his other responsibilities back in Jacksonville, assistant men's tennis coach
Randy Phillips helped his home country of Jamaica make Davis Cup history after advancing through to the Group II stage this past weekend.
Phillips and his teammates in Jamaica defeated Estonia, 3-2, with Phillips winning in straight sets against Kristjan Tamm in the opening round. Phillips was dominant, winning 6-1 in both sets.
"It (Group II qualification) is an amazing feeling," Phillips said. We have been to this playoff three times and haven't won. So, it is a great feeling for us to go through on Jamaican soil."
Joining Phillips at the Eric Bell National Tennis Center in Jamaica were teammates Blaise Bicknell, John Chni, Mel Spence and Daniel Azar.
"I am super proud of the guys," head coach Spence said. "Randy was incredible. Blaise didn't play his best tennis but fought very well, while Daniel and John did their best and got an opportunity to get their feet wet in doubles."
