From the Jump - Women's Basketball Travels to Tennessee to Take On Austin Peay, Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball will leave its home state for the first time in three weeks when the Ospreys head up north once again to face Austin Peay on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. ET, followed by Lipscomb on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m. ET.

Both Thursday and Saturday's conference matchups will be broadcasted on ESPN+. Updates for each game will be made through live stats, as well as on Twitter at OspreyWBB.


FROM THE JUMP

  • The Ospreys will play ASUN newcomer Austin Peay for the first time in program history on Thursday.
  • APSU is the second new conference opponent the Ospreys have played this season, as they played Queens in January.
  • UNF looks to split season series against Lipscomb and avenge their six-point loss at home earlier this season.
  • Have not lost at Lipscomb since the 2017-18 season, as they're riding a four-game winning streak in Nashville.
  • The drive from Clarksville, Tenn., to Nashville, Tenn., is just over an hour distance.
  • Lyric Swann and Kaila Rougier both average just over 11 points per game in conference play.
  • The Swann sisters remain the leaders on the team in three-pointers with 71 combined out of the 141 total on the team.
  • L. Swann also leads the team in field goal attempts with 275 total with the second-most being 168 by Rougier.
  • Emma Broermann remains the only Osprey to hit triple digits in rebounds with 139 total, averaging 6.6 RPG.
  • She is the only player to start all 21 games and joins Sarah Taub and Helena Rafnsdottir to appear in all games this season.
  • Rougier is three assists away from 50 in conference play this season, as she also leads the team in overall assists with 65 total.
  • In ASUN play, the sophomore has been averaging 11.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG and 4.3 APG.
  • Maddie Millar started the second game of her career against FGCU after being selected as ASUN Freshman of the Week for her performance against JU.


SCOUTING REPORT

Austin Peay: The Governors sport a 14-7 overall record, which includes a stellar 9-2 record in conference play for their debut season in the ASUN...they enter the game against UNF with three-game winning streak, as well as wins in eight of their last nine games...they have played two Power Five opponents in Vanderbilt and Duke this season...only losses in conference this season has been to Kennesaw State and Liberty...Shamarre Hale leads the team in points per game with an 11.2 average...she also has the top marks for rebounds with 6.8 RPG and field goal percentage with .687% on the season...Yamia Johnson is the second player with a double-digit scoring average at 10.9 PPG, while Mariah Adams has 9.7 PPG, as well as team-leading 4.3 APG and 1.7 SPG.

Lipscomb: The Bison have an overall record of 15-8 and a conference record of 9-2 on the year...they have also played two Power Five teams with TCU and Vanderbilt both being single-digit losses...they will enter the weekend with back-to-back road wins over EKU and Bellarmine...only ASUN losses have also been to Kennesaw State and Liberty...played in the Bank of Hawaii Classic earlier this season with a win over Hawaii in overtime...four players have double-digit averages with three players leading with 13.5 PPG...Jalyn Holcomb, Bella Vinson and Aleah Sorrentino all have the top scoring mark, but Vinson has the best average in ASUN games with 15.5 PPG...Sorrentino also leads by a good margin for rebounds with 8.8 RPG, while Ainhoa Cea remains the assist leader with 4.8 APG...Vinson and Holcomb are the three-point snipers for the Bison with 96 combined over 23 games played.


AN OSPREY WIN AGAINST AUSTIN PEAY WOULD...

- Be the first win against the Governers in program history.
- Break a two-game losing streak.
- Notch first road win since Queens on Jan. 5.
- Be second win against a top-three team in the conference.


AN OSPREY WIN AGAINST LIPSCOMB WOULD...

- Be fourth consecutive road win in Nashville.
- Split the season series after suffering defeat at home in January.
- Give UNF three wins against the Bison in their last four meetings.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball (4-9, 1-2 ASUN) almost pulled off the fourth-quarter comeback after posting a 16-2 run but came out just short in its conference home opener against Lipscomb (9-6, 3-0 ASUN), 69-63, on Saturday afternoon.

LOOKING AHEAD

UNF will return home for their final home weekend of the season when they play Jacksonville State on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., along with Kennesaw State for senior day on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m.

 


OTHER SEASON NOTES

TEN
The Ospreys will man an 10-player roster throughout the 2022-23 season, which is the lowest it has been under head coach Darrick Gibbs.

NEWBIES
The Ospreys have plenty of new faces to go around with six transfers and three freshmen bringing their talents to Jacksonville, Fla.

Elysa Wesolek (South Carolina), Brianna Livingston (Monmouth), Selma Eklund (UNC-Wilmington) come directly from D-I programs, while Lyric Swann (CCBC Essex) and Jaelyn Swann (CCBC Essex) are additions from NJCCAinstitutions. The Swann sisters do have experience playing at the D-I level, as they previously played for UMBC before transferring to CCBC Essex.

UNF brings in three freshmen after only have one on the roster this past season (Kaila Rougier). Maddie Millar, the only in-state product on the team, and Sarah Taub are guards with stellar shooting abilities. Helena Rafnsdottir also joins as a freshman after playing for her club team in Iceland since she was five years old, as well as the Icelandic Women's National Team.

Assistant coach Myron Brown and director of operations Adrienne Jackson are also welcomed as a newcomers to the squad. Brown joins the Ospreys' coaching staff after being the head women's basketball coach for Thomas University since 2017. Jackson returns to UNF after playing under Darrick Gibbs from 2016-2020.

TWIN TIES
Lyric and Jaelyn Swann both transfer in from CCBC Essex in Maryland to join the Osprey roster. They are one of 15 sets of twins playing for the same Division I women's basketball team this season.

This is also the second consecutive year that UNF will sport a set of sisters on the squad, as Jazz and Jaida Bond both played for the Ospreys this past year.

INTERNATIONAL FACES
Helena Rafnsdottir (Iceland), Selma Eklund (Sweden) and Brianna Livingston (Canada) all join the Ospreys this season representing three different countries. Rafnsdottir and Eklund both have experience playing for the national teams of their respective countries.

It's the third straight season rostering three or more international players, while it also being the first time since 2014-15 that three or more players come from unique countries outside the United States.

INTERNATIONAL PLACES
UNF will make the trip out the Dublin, Ireland, to compete in the MAAC-ASUN Dublin Challenge, joining Eastern Kentucky as the fellow ASUN member playing against MAAC foes.

They are scheduled to compete against Rider on Friday, Nov. 18, at 2:30 p.m. EST, followed by a matchup against Marist the next day on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 9:30 a.m. EST.

SUNSHINE STATE
UNF plays 17 of their 29 games this season inside the state of Florida, including 13 of the 17 matchups played at UNFArena.

It will also be the first time since the 2014-2015 season that the Ospreys will open the season with two games inside their home arena.

ROAD RUNNERS
The Ospreys will visit six different states in their travel schedule on the year, along with their pair of games overseas in Dublin, Ireland.

UNF will visit Wisconsin, Ireland and Alabama before Christmas break, and will return with trips to North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas.

Out of this year's road slate, the Ospreys will play against four Power Five opponents in Wisconsin, Miami (FL), Auburn and Alabama.

BROERMANN TIME
Emma Broermann leads this team as the unquestioned leader heading into the 2021-22 season. She enters he senior season as the only player on the team with more than one year of experience playing for UNF.

Last season, she was the only player on the team to start all 30 games played. The Okeana, Ohio, native also had the second-best field goal percentage (.602) and the ninth-most blocks (25) in the conference.

Broermann enters her senior season with the Ospreys sitting in the top spot for field goal percentage (.550), as well as the 10th-most blocks (37), in D-I program history.
