UNF Lone Team With Multiple Multi-Year Honorees on 2022-23 Squad
ATLANTA - North Florida men's basketball's Carter Hendricksen and Jose Placer were honored by the league office Monday as Hendricksen earned a spot on the ASUN Conference Second Team and Placer picked up an ASUN Third Team honor as released by the conference.
UNF is the lone team in the league this year to have two honorees that have already picked up previous all-league recognition. The Ospreys are also just one of five teams to have multiple honorees on either of the first, second or third teams.Â
Placer and Hendricksen are both multi-year honorees, adding more accolades to their already extensive résumés in the Navy and Gray. The full team can be seen at this link, or via the link at the top of the story.Â
The duo joined each other on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District squad earlier this month, while also being tabbed to the 2022-23 Preseason All-ASUN team.
Carter Hendricksen | Fifth-Year Senior | Mt. Sterling, Ky. | Forward/Guard | 6-7
Hendricksen's career has been nothing short of historic. Between versatility, skill, perseverance and continued development, Hendricksen will conclude his career in the top ten of at least 15 different statistical categories in the North Florida record books.Â
"Carter Hendricksen is concluding his illustrious career with yet another accolade, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest UNF student-athletes," head coach Matthew Driscoll said. "Carter has worked tirelessly to be at the top of his game since he stepped foot on campus, perpetually using all of his resources inside and outside of the game in order to be at his peak performance. This is an area where student-athletes can struggle due to lack of discipline, but it has set him apart. Carter will undoubtedly take every learned and earned scenario on to his next chapter in life as he surely will continue to go 1-0 in everything he pursues."
His production never waned after bursting on the scene late in the 2018-19 season as a true freshman. This year, Hendricksen has averaged a career-best 16.5 points across 30 starts, bringing down 6.3 boards per game while draining a career-high 39.3 percent of his three-pointers taken.Â
The multi-tool wing took the league by storm once again, averaging 18.1 points per game across league competitions while snagging 6.4 boards per contest. His efficiency helped tally large numbers as he ranked third in the league during ASUN play for three-point percentage, shooting a sizzling 46.2 percent.
Not only did he score a career-best 35 points during a 95-90 shootout win against Queens, but he grabbed a critical defensive board with less than a minute to go on the clock, sealing the win. His defensive rebounding was a consistent part of his game this year as he ranked second in the conference with 151 defensive boards.Â
The Mt. Sterling, Ky., native scored in double figures 26 times, while breaking the 20-point marker eight instances. He joined Dallas Moore as the only other Osprey in UNF history to surpass 30-point marker three times in less than 10 days, doing so with a 35-point outing against Queens, 32 at Central Arkansas and 31 at UNA.
Hendricksen put up three double-doubles, finishing just one board shy of a fourth on his Senior Night during a win against Bellarmine. The 25-point game against the Knights pushed him past 800-career points in the UNF Arena alone
This season saw him knock off multiple UNF milestones, including seeing him rise all the way up to second all-time in UNF history for points scored. He became just the fifth Osprey to reach the 1,500-point milestone Jan. 28 at UNA. Earlier on in the season he became the fourth Osprey to eclipse 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists. In the season-opener at Gonzaga he became the eighth Osprey to surpass 200-career three-pointers. Just last Friday he also became the fourth player in program history to reach 300-made free throws.
Hendricksen's performance on the court extends far outside the sidelines as he is coming off his second College Sports Communicator's Academic All-District honor. The three-time ASUN All-Academic honoree was also named the 2020-21 ASUN Scholar-Athlete.Â
Hendricksen is now a two-time second team all-league honoree and one-time first team honoree. He was named to the league all-tournament team during UNF's regular season championship season, the same year he picked up a pair of weekly league honors.
With tonight's game at Liberty, Hendricksen will also tie UNF legend, Dallas Moore, for most games played in UNF history with 135.
Jose Placer | Redshirt-Junior | Orlando, Fla. | Guard | 6-1
Placer polished off another standout regular season with third team all-league honors, his second ASUN Postseason honor since first suiting up for the Ospreys at the start of the 2020-21 season.Â
The dangerous guard wreaked havoc on defenses this season, with Placer averaging 16.1 points and 2.8 assists per game during ASUN play. All-told, Placer averaged 14.1 points per game across 30 games, his third-straight year averaging at least 14 points per contest.
"Jose Placer has demonstrated night in and night out that he not only can score at all three levels, but that he has the ability to take over a game whenever needed," head coach Matthew Driscoll said. "Jose is never hesitant to take a big shot or deliver the game-winning assist, and he repeatedly has come through in those moments. Throughout his career he has continuously attacked his training and development from a physical and mental standpoint, especially in rebounding from last year's injury-plagued campaign. Jose has always set the highest of standards for his game and that mentality is arguably the greatest asset that he has driving him daily."
Placer went for 22 games with double-digit points, including 14 in 18 ASUN contests. His marquee game came with a career-best 10 three-pointers as he poured in 32 points and stunned eventual first-seeded Kennesaw State, 89-86, with a final possession three-pointer from well beyond the arc. That night put him second in UNF history for most made three-pointers in a game, just behind UNF Hall of Famer Parker Smith.Â
The guard would go on to have two more 30-plus point nights, with one coming at Lipscomb as he tallied 32 in a historic, 114-11, double-overtime win against the Bisons in Nashville. Earlier in the month he stunned Jacksonville at Swisher Gymnasium with 21 of his 30 points coming in a first half eruption as North Florida kicked off a hot month of February.Â
For the season he paced North Florida in scoring eight times and in assists on nine occasions, serving as a table-setter and scorer on a team of talented guards. Placer appeared in all 30 games, averaging a career-best 32.9 minutes per night.Â
Two scoring milestones were also checked off this season, as Placer surpassed 1,000-career collegiate points during an ASUN-opening overtime win against Austin Peay Dec. 31. He would then become the latest member of the 1,000-point club for games played in a UNF uniform, doing so against FGCU Feb. 9 at home.Â
Placer joined Hendricksen on the ASUN Preseason All-League team as well as the CSC Academic All-District Team. The redshirt-junior was named to the second team back in the 2020-21 season, the same season he was tabbed ASUN Newcomer of the Week on a pair of occasions.Â

Placer, Hendricksen and the Ospreys begin their postseason push tonight against eighth-seeded Bellarmine at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
