Women's Basketball Drops River City Battle at Jacksonville

First of Two Games Played Against JU This Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball (5-13, 2-6 ASUN) was unable to bounce back from a fiery second quarter from Jacksonville (9-9, 3-5 ASUN), as the Ospreys fell to the Dolphins, 74-51, on Thursday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.

The Ospreys kept it a defensive game through the first 10 minutes, but had opportunities slip through their fingers and saw the game get away from them. UNF will have its chance to respond in a just two days from now when they get their rematch on its home court this Saturday.

Lyric Swann recorded another double-digit scoring performance with 15 points on the night, which was the most scored by the redshirt junior since Jan. 7 against Lipscomb. She also was on the court for 39 total minutes to give her eight games this season with over 35 minutes played.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

First Half: Both teams struggled on the offensive side of the ball early with only four points scored in just under five minutes of play time...Maddie Millar made the first big splash for the Ospreys with a three-pointer from the corner...L. Swann responded with her first points on a layup to maintain the early lead over JU...the Dolphins went up four before the end of the first, but not before Kaila Rougier made a bucket to keep it a one-possession game through the first...Elysa Wesolek carried her presence in the paint with a layup to start the second period...JU put together a 16-3 run coming out of their huddle from the first period, but was stopped with a score from L. Swann...Jaelyn Swann provided a spark with an and-one score to cut into the Dolphins' deficit before the break.

Second Half: Coming out of the half, L. Swann forced herself to the free throw line, followed by a made trey from Rougier...a L. Swann three and a jumper from Emma Broermann continued a 10-3 run for UNF to start the second half...Wesolek and L. Swann made baskets inside the arc to end the third quarter for the Ospreys...Broermann scored six points in another run of 8-3 to start the fourth, followed with a long three from L. Swann...Selma Eklund, as well as Millar, put together late scores but it wasn't enough against their crosstown rivals on the road.

COACH'S THOUGHTS

"We have to do a better job of having awareness offensively and we have to execute better to generate the shots that we need to. We also need to take care of the basketball, but we did better in the second half. The second quarter killed us because every one of the turnovers were at the top and they all led to points. They're all correctable things and it was just us and being casual with the ball. The game plan was right on point and what we needed, but we just didn't execute tonight."
-- head coach Darrick Gibbs
