Honor Given to the Highest GPA of Any Student-Athlete at the NCAA Championships
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - For the first time in the history of the University of North Florida, one of its student-athletes earned the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 Award as Kit Gulihur was honored via a surprise presentation of the laurel Sunday, May 22 in Champaign, Ill.Â
An award created by the NCAA, the Elite 90 acknowledges the true essence of what it means to be a student-athlete by recognizing the individual who has reached the championship level while also attaining the highest GPA among all other competitors in the championship field of their respective sport.Â
Gulihur is not only the first Osprey to ever receive the honor, but also is just the tenth student-athlete in ASUN Conference history to ever receive the award. In addition, Gulihur is the first-ever student-athlete representing the sport of women's tennis who was named to the honor out of the ASUN Conference.
Gulihur, who is competing in both the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, is coming off a historic season on the courts and in the classroom.Â
Just last Thursday, Gulihur became the first student-athlete in program history to be named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team. A month earlier, Gulihur was named ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year for consecutive seasons, ASUN Player of the Year, First Team All-ASUN and ASUN Doubles Pair of the Year with doubles partner Ana Paula Melilo.
A psychology major, Gulihur possesses a perfect GPA. Four times this season Gulihur was named ASUN Tennis Player of the Week, while receiving Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles and singles rankings all spring season long.Â
Gulihur has gone 23-3 in singles play if you take into account fall tennis. Also in the fall, Gulihur and Melilo advanced to the ITA Nationals in doubles, becoming the first Ospreys to do so. The pair was ranked as high as number five in the nation.
For more on the award per the NCAA
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above academically who have participated in a sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.Â
