JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After winning matches against Southeastern Louisiana and Jacksonville at The Coop Friday, UNF beach volleyball (19-10) made the short trek to Dolphin Beach on the campus of Jacksonville University to face the same two teams Saturday, April 9. The same result ensued, with North Florida taking a match apiece from the aforementioned teams, completing a 4-0 weekend in the River City.
UNF worked through some of the windiest conditions the program has endured this season, managing to defeat SLU (10-16), 4-1, before sweeping Jacksonville (10-20), 5-0.
"I was really proud of the team's focus today as we showed up with an attack mentality and really played some nice volleyball," head coach Doug Wright said. "We experienced some of the windiest conditions we have played in this season and we did a great job controlling our contacts and using the wind to our advantage."
As was the case in the doubleheader Friday, the lineup saw some movement to accommodate injuries and provide an opportunity for added experience in advance of postseason play just weeks away.
Zoe Cahill and
Julianna Askew made another appearance at the second slot,
Gabby O'Connell and
Lauren Galinis teamed up again in the match against JU and the duo of
Madeline Camp and Mariana Feliciano-Sanchez completed a 3-0 weekend as a pair.
"Due to some injuries we had to move a few teams around and create new pairs these last two days," Wright said. "Julianna and Zoe played one of their best matches this season as the second pair against JU. Two of our freshmen, Madeline and Mariana, played their first match together yesterday and have now won three in a row after their two wins. The teams of Taryn and Callie, Gabby and Lauren, and Chantel and Hayden also turned in dominant performances. There was some good growth today that is going to help prepare us for this week when we host Stetson Wednesday."
Match 1: UNF 4, SLU 1
UNF was a set away from sweeping the Lions after sweeping courts three, four and five.
Callie Workman and
Taryn Griffey got into the win column this time against SLU, winning in three frames, while Cahill and Askew dropped their third-set decision.
