Baseball’s Four-Run Eighth Pivotal in Rubber Game Win Against UCF

Ospreys Win, 4-2, to Take Two of Three Against UCF on the Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UCF (11-5) and North Florida sent dueling southpaws out to the mound and all the scoring in the game was done in the eighth inning, but it was North Florida (6-11) that emerged on top, 4-2, in a soundly played rubber game Sunday, March 13.

Both starting pitchers were spectacular, despite both leaving the field with no decisions. UCF's Hunter Patteson fanned 10 in seven scoreless, while UNF's Tony Roca went a season-long 7.2 innings, allowing only two earned while spinning 126 pitches.

The scoreboard was riddled with zeros until the eighth. UCF's Pablo Ruiz took a payoff pitch into left for a two-out two-RBI single, giving the Knights a brief 2-0 lead. In what was almost an identical situation, Dallen Leach tied the game on a two-out bases loaded two-RBI single in the bottom half. Brock Edge eventually won the game with a two-RBI triple into the gap in right center.

UCF threatened in the ninth by getting runners to first and second, but UNF's Abraham Sequera snagged a liner and doubled-off the runner at first base to end it.

Behind the Line Score
  • UCF got the first two runners of the game on base, but Tony Roca dialed it in to get two strikeouts and a lineout.
  • Brock Edge coaxed a leadoff walk in the fifth and got to second, but UCF's Alex Freeland made a nice over-the-shoulder catch to retire Trey Spratling-Williams and keep things scoreless.
  • UNF appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the second as Aidan Sweatt grounded into a double play with nobody out and runners at first and third. However, a runner's interference call on the double play kept Isaiah Byars at third base.
  • UCF pushed the first runs of the game across home in the eighth. The Knights loaded the bags thanks to a single, bunt single and a walk. With two out and a 3-2 count on Pablo Ruiz, Ruiz singled through the left side.
  • UNF put up a four spot in the eighth, taking a 4-2 lead. All four runs came with two outs. Dallen Leach took a 1-2 delivery through the right side, plating two as the bags were loaded. One batter later, Brock Edge drove a triple into right center, scoring two for the lead.
  • UCF got runners to first and second in the ninth, but Abraham Sequera snagged a liner and doubled up UCF's runner at first to end the game.
