MEN'S SOCCER MATCH NOTES: ASUN CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINALS VS FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - No. 5 North Florida men's soccer begins the opening round of postseason play facing off against No. 4 Florida Gulf Coast in the ASUN Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Nashville, Tenn., at 8 p.m. EST.


WHAT TO KNOW

  • First appearance for the Ospreys in the ASUN Championship tournament since the spring 2021 season.
  • Six current players for UNF started against FGCU last time the Ospreys played in the conference tournament.
  • Ospreys are in search of their first ASUN Championship semifinals appearance since 2019.
  • UNF has played well on both sides of the ball as of recent with double-digit shot totals in four of their past five games, as well as only one shot on goal allowed combined in their past three matches.
  • Seven different Osprey players have scored goals on the year, with Joaquin Acnua being the only one with two total.
  • Braden Masker, Nino Smith and Herbie Steigelman all lead the team with two assists this season.
  • Micah Gun made his debut start midseason against FAU and has posted a 3-1-3 record with 22 saves in front of the net ever since.
  • LJ Estes joins Gun as recent winners of conference weekly honors, as Estes was awarded his fourth career ASUN Defensive Player of the Week and Gun collected his third ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week on the year.


SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

FGCU comes into this meeting as the fourth seed in the ASUN Championship with a 7-4-4 overall record and a 3-2-3 record in conference play. They also sport a 5-1-1 record at home and are only 2-3-3 on the road.

Since the Eagles scoreless draw against UNF on Oct. 7, 2022, they recorded three wins, two losses and a tie, including a 2-1-1 record against ASUN opponents. UNF during that same span holds a 2-1-2 record overall with the same record against the conference.

Davi Alves and Aedon Kyra have been the scoring presence for the Eagles through the 2022 season, as they combine for 11 goals out of 22 total for FGCU. They also have four players that share the team lead for assists with two total, including former UNF forward Jovoney Brown.

FGCU has a strong presence at keeper with Wyatt Kistner totaling the most minutes on the year with three games played. He has racked up 40 total saves, only 13 goals allowed, and a 6-3-4 record with six shutouts.


SERIES HISTORY

  • The Ospreys are 2-13-6 all-time against FGCU with a 0-1-1 record against the Eagles on neutral grounds.
  • UNF is 1-3 against FGCU in the ASUN Championship tournament with losses in the last three matchups.
  • Last time the Ospreys made the conference tourney was in spring 2021, where they lost to the Eagles in penalty kicks.
  • The last win UNF has against FGCU occurred on Oct. 18, 2016, with a 3-2 win in Fort Myers, Fla.
  • UNF played the Eagles at a neutral site earlier this season with a scoreless draw on Oct. 7, in Tampa, Fla.
