MEN'S SOCCER MATCH NOTES: VS LIBERTY

10/27/2022 1:00:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's soccer returns home to honor five student-athletes on senior night against Liberty on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m.

Defensive captain LJ Estes, midfielders Igor Martins and Luto Tom, forward Bryson Smith, and goalkeeper Padraic Gilley, will be recognized before the game for their contributions to the program.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • With both UNF and Liberty having five points for the final projected seed in the ASUN Championship, a win for either side would all but clinch them a spot in postseason play.
  • This will be the Ospreys' second home match played since Sept. 17 with the only other one since then being Saturday, Oct. 15, against Bellarmine in a 1-1 draw.
  • Similar to how Liberty will be looking for their first road win of the season, UNF will also be in search for their first home win on the year.
  • After starting Micah Gun at keeper for the past six games, the Ospreys went back to Gilley in front of the net against College of Charleston, as he posted a shutout with only three shots faced in the game.
  • Martins returned from injury earlier this week against College of Charleston and will play in front of a home crowd for the first time in 2022.
  • This will be UNF's third game played on a Friday this year with a loss at home against Georgia State in the season opener, as well as a draw on neutral grounds against FGCU.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Liberty comes into this match with a 3-5-5 record, as well as 1-3-2 record in conference play. They currently are tied for sixth in the ASUN conference with North Florida and Queens (N.C.).

The Flames have yet to win a match on the road this season, as they sport a 0-2-4 in away games on the year. They head into this game with back-to-back losses to Georgia State and Central Arkansas, with their last conference win being against Bellarmine.

Luke Eberle has been the leader for the Flames with six goals scored and two assists in 13 games played. He also leads the team in points (12), shots per game (18), and shots on goal (13) per game as well.

Two goalkeepers have seen time in front of the net for Liberty with Blake Franzen having more starts (10) and saves (25), but Danny Cordero has the better goals against average on the season at 0.89 in his six starts. Franzen has started in four of the last five games, but has only posted a 0-2-2 record in those matches.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Ospreys are 3-1 all-time against Liberty with a 1-0 record against the Flames at home.
  • Last season, the Ospreys closed their year on a 4-1 loss to the Flames on the road with the lone goal scored by Joaquin Acuna.
  • This will only be the second time that UNF has played Liberty at home, as their last matchup at Hodges was a 1-0 shutout victory in 2019.
  • They also beat the Flames in the ASUN postseason later in 2019 with a 3-2 victory in Fort Myers, Fla.
  • UNF has averaged two goals per game in the four matches played against Liberty.
