MEN'S SOCCER MATCH NOTES: AT QUEENS (N.C.)

10/2/2022 12:00:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After the match was postponed by two days due to Hurricane Ian, North Florida men's soccer is ready to roll back into ASUN play on the road against conference newcomer Queens (N.C.) on Monday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • The Ospreys have ramped up the offense in recent games by scoring three times in their past two matches.
  • Two of the three goals scored this past week were by sophomore Joaquin Acuna, who came off the bench both times on only 87 minutes of total playing time.
  • Bryson Smith, Braden Masker, Rio Onwumere and Dean Walker all picked up assists in their last match against Mercer.
  • Bendeguz Burka, who picked up his first goal of the year at Mercer last week, remains the leading shot taker with 14 total.
  • Herbie Steigelman leads the team in minutes played and also joins Burka as the only two Ospreys to start all eight games this year.
  • Ale Rodriguez Lopez, as well as Acuna, both lead the team in shots on goal with five total.
  • Micah Gun has been the keeper for UNF in its past two games, as he has totaled five saves in those games.
  • This will be their third consecutive game on the road in the middle of a four-game away slate.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Queens enters Monday's match with a 1-7 record to go with their 0-2 conference record. This will be their first ASUN match as the host team this season.

The Lions lone win of the year came in the third match of the season at UNC Asheville, 3-0. They are currently on a three-match losing streak and have suffered losses to Stetson and Lipscomb.

This is the team's first season playing in the ASUN after making the transition into the conference and Division I level in July 2022. They were also picked to finish ninth in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll at the beginning of the season.

One of the biggest names on this Queens squad is sophomore forward Mario Goic, who has scored four goals and assisted on one another so far on the year. He is also the leader in total shots (30) and shots on goal (12) by a wide margin, as no other player has double of what Goic has produced in 2022.

SERIES HISTORY

- The Ospreys are 0-1 all-time against Queens (N.C.).
- Their lone matchup was a neutral site game played on Aug. 28, 2004, at Morrow, Ga.
- This will be their first matchup as ASUN and DI foes.

ON TAP

North Florida will compete its last leg of a four-game road slate when it takes on FGCU Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. Due to the impact of Hurricane Ian in southwest Florida, a location change is in the realm of possibilities.
