DeLAND, Fla. - Tied 3-3, Stetson got the edge in a three-set tiebreaker at singles slot number two as the UNF men's tennis team (6-10, 2-3 ASUN) dropped a grinder at Stetson, 4-3, Wednesday, April 7.
The match lasted over three and a half hours, with four of six singles courts going to three sets.
How it Happened
Stetson (3-7, 1-3 ASUN) jumped out to a 2-1 lead at every doubles court before UNF turned things up to get the advantage at slots one through three.
Nilo Duarte and
Matt Carroll were the first to pull ahead at slot three, opening up a 4-2 advantage before closing out a 6-3 win.
Dominik Barton and
Rodrigo Crespo collected the clinching point, winning 7-5 against Linus Bergevi and Sven Thiergard.
Singles started with the Ospreys taking set one at four of six courts. Crespo was the first to finish, dispatching Fabian Penzoker 6-2, 6-1.
Barton had his six-match singles winning streak snapped as Diogo Marques got one back for Stetson at the top position.
From there it was a battle for the final four points. Stetson took the second set at slots two, three and six, forcing a deciding set at three courts.
Nunez came up big at the sixth slot, gritting out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win against Tim Gennes.
UNF's shot at 4-1 win was deterred at the third court as Stetson's Clement Hamel got the edge on
Matt Carroll in three frames.
Things became knotted 3-3 when the Hatters claimed the fourth position.
PJ Kotan took the second frame from Alexandre Hillhouse, 6-2, although Hillhouse earned the deciding session, 6-3.
Duarte and Sanchez clashed in a three-set tiebreaker to decide the day. Despite being down in the third set, Duarte rallied to tie it, 6-6. Sanchez won in the tiebreaker to clinch the match.

Coach Lucas' Comments
"It was a terrible loss from us today in a match that we did not have business losing. We were in complete control and we let Stetson hang around. We don't have a killer instinct, and that has been haunting us all season. Until we get nastier and finish teams, these types of results can happen."
