MATCH NOTES: Men's Soccer Looks to Clinch Playoff Berth Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's soccer (4-7-1) looks to clinch a spot in next weekend's ASUN playoffs when they travel to Liberty on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 6 pm.


WHAT TO KNOW

  • With a win against Liberty, the Ospreys would advance to the ASUN playoffs next weekend, while a loss against the Flames would result in the end of the season.
  • The Ospreys would still advance to the ASUN playoffs with a draw, along with any result but a draw between Jacksonville and Bellarmine.
  • Freshman Joaquin Acuna still leads the team in goals, with four, while senior Jovoney Brown is the shots and shots on goal leader for UNF with 18 shots and 10 shots on goal.
  • Junior Bendeguz Burka, who leads the team in minutes, and senior Giovanny Abreu, who won ASUN Defensive Player of the Week earlier this month, will look to connect again for the third time this season on a goal-assist combo when taking on Liberty this weekend.
  • Goalkeeper Padraic Gilley has recorded 22 saves over his past four games played, including two shutout wins against Lipscomb and Stetson.
  • Eight of the Ospreys' 11 usual starters did not see the field against FAU this past Tuesday in order to rest for the win-or-go-home match this Saturday in Lynchburg, Va.


SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Liberty holds a 6-8 record on the season and a 2-4 record in ASUN play. They are currently on a three-game losing streak that includes conference losses to Bellarmine and Central Arkansas.

Noah Holmes is the scoring leader for the Flames with six goals, while also assisting on a goal this season. He also leads the team in shots, 26, and shots on goal, 16.

Danny Cordero has appeared in eight games at goalkeeper for Liberty and has recorded 18 saves in those games played. He has allowed 1.66 goals per game this season and has a 2-6 record as the starting goalkeeper.


SERIES HISTORY

- North Florida is 3-0 all-time against Liberty since they joined the ASUN conference in 2018.
- All three wins against the Flames have been by one goal, including a 3-2 win in the playoffs.
- The Ospreys have one win against them at home, one win on the road, and one win on a neutral site.
- UNF did not play against Liberty during the 2021 spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the Ospreys defeat Liberty on Saturday, they will play in the ASUN quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 5.
