Baseball Drops Twin Bill With Central Michigan

CMU Takes Doubleheader 5-2, 6-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida (3-10) played its first and only scheduled doubleheader of the 2020 campaign Saturday, dropping a pair of tight contests to Central Michigan (9-5) March 7. Both games were seven-inning contests at a sunny but windy Harmon Stadium.

Behind the Line Score
  • Blake Marabell stayed hot after his three-hit Friday, doubling to start the second. Trey Spratling-Williams scored him with an RBI single back up the box.
  • CMU got even in the fifth. Zach Lechnir laced a one out double to right center before moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on an Aidan Shephardson single up the middle. Lechnir benefited from a bad hop on his batted ball, allowing him to reach second.
  • Eddie Miller inherited one runner in the top of the fifth before allowing a single. The redshirt-senior picked off a CMU baserunner and struck out Jakob Marsee to end the frame.
  • CMU took advantage of a pair of walks, plating three runs to take a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth. After two free passes, Zach Gilles reached on a bunt single. Chase Rollin scored Zavier Warren with a single down the line, although Gilles was thrown out on the play after getting caught between bases. On a 3-2 count, Lechnir flared one down the right field line that Raff Libunao slid for but couldn't hang on to, scoring two.
  • Heeke dropped a sky high Blake Marabell pop up, allowing Marabell to reach second to start the sixth. Chris Matthias clubbed his first career triple, scoring Marabell. Ian Leatherman came in for Patty, getting the next two batters.
  • CMU got one back in the seventh. Marsee singled before scoring on a Warren double deep to left center.
  • Leatherman retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn the save.

Behind the Line Score
  • Zach Lechnir continued what he started in game one, homering to left field on a 3-2 count atop the second inning.
  • UNF evened the game in the bottom of the second. Ricky Presno doubled to right center and moved to third on a Marabell single through the left side. CMU pitcher Cameron Brown induced a double play one batter later, but Presno did score on the play.
  • Three errors in the infield and a pair of hits helped CMU take a 5-1 lead with a four-run fourth.
  • North Florida crossed home once in the bottom of the fourth. Raff Libunao reached on a throwing error from CMU's first baseman in attempt to find Chippewa pitcher Cameron Brown on the three-one putout. A walk, fielder's choice and Trey Spratling-Williams RBI single through the right side made it 5-2.
  • UNF threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, getting the tying run 90 feet from home. 
  • Presno opened the sixth with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Marabell advanced Presno to third with a deep fly out before the third baseman scored on a passed ball. Spratling-Williams walked and Matthias hooked a double inside the left field line. Tanner Clark scored the first baseman with an RBI groundout before CMU's Cameron Miller fanned Tucker Horsley
  • The Chippewas added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before Cameron Miller closed the door in the bottom of the seventh.
