2021 Hall of Fame Class Announced

JACKSONVILLE – The University of North Florida Athletic Department in conjunction with the UNF Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced the 2021 Hall of Fame Class featuring a combination of Division I and pre-Division I competitors along with a collection of teams. Â

The latest Hall of Fame class includes: Phil Black (Baseball), Cari Chewning (Softball), Carolina Lencina (Women's Soccer), Kevin Phelan (Men's Golf), Parker Smith (Men's Basketball) and a three-year span of Beach Volleyball teams from 2012-14.

"As one of the most exciting events of every season, this year's Hall of Fame ceremony will again be a special time" said UNF Athletic Director Lee Moon. "Our Hall of Fame committee did an outstanding job of putting together a class that highlights success from both our Pre-DI and Division I eras. Our athletic program has enjoyed successes at different levels and this class is truly a reflection of the top tier athletes and teams that have represented the Ospreys."
The 2021 UNF Athletic Hall of Fame Class induction ceremony and festivities will be announced at a later date.

PHIL BLACK
(Baseball | 1988-89)
"I am honored to be selected for the UNF Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2021. UNF was such a memorable and influential part of my life. In addition to earning a degree, I was blessed to have had amazing coaches and teachers that taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance as well as teammates that enabled me to experience the rewards of friendship, trust and teamwork. I will always cherish my time at this university."
- Threw first no-hitter in school history
- All-District 1988 and 1989 (only three other players accomplished this…two are in HOF - Sid Roberson/ Darryl Kennedy)
- Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 29th round of the 1989 Draft (decided not to sign for family reasons)

However, I would not be here today if it wasn't for the guidance and leadership of all those people, especially my dear coach Linda Hamilton. She believed in me and taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my life. She always said, 'You have to show up, even when you can't control the outcome.' In the game of my life, when its overtime and I'm down on the scoreboard, I show up and worry only about the things I can control. I play ball and leave it all on the field.
