Softball Beats Army, Buffalo to Extend Win Streak

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Thanks to strong pitching and hot bats, North Florida softball grabbed wins against Army and Buffalo to extend its winning streak to five games. UNF blanked Army, 3-0 before beating Buffalo, 7-1, to open the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational.

UNF last had a five-game win streak in 2018 during the USF Series games.

Win | Sydney Matzko (6-4) | Save: Morgan Blourne (1)
Loss | Macey Newbary (3-3)

How it Happened:
  • North Florida didn't wait long to put runs up as it scored two in the first. Tiffany Lower led off with a single before stealing second. She came around to score on Taylor Engman's double to the wall.
  • Engman then moved over, thanks to a single from Dominica Cocuzza and a walk for Navia Penrod
  • Veronika Klimplova then hit a sac fly to right field to bring in Engman and give UNF the 2-0 lead.
  • Matzko and the Osprey defense allowed just two runners to reach past second through the next four innings.
  • The Ospreys added to their lead in the fifth when Cocuzza singled down the line before a deep double from Penrod made it a 3-0 game.
  • Matzko has now fanned five batters in back-to-back games. Blourne earned her second career save against Army.

  • A Buffalo miscue in the fifth allowed Megan Woodson to come across after reaching on a walk.
  • The Bulls scored one with a double down the left line to make it a 3-1 game, but the Ospreys' bats came to life in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
  • Back-to-back singles put runners on and with one crack of the bat, Makenzie Griffin sent her second home run of the season over the left field wall to make it a 6-1 game.
