ATLANTA - North Florida men's soccer had seven players earn postseason ASUN accolades as announced by the league office on Thursday evening.
"I am happy for the guys that got recognized for all-conference awards both on the field and in the classroom," said head coach Derek Marinatos. "However, our motivation as a collective group has nothing to do with individual awards. We feel we have the best overall team defense in the league and we have an opportunity to continue to prove that heading into the conference tournament."
LJ Estes and Jake Hawker garnered ASUN All-Conference second team recogntitions. Bendeguz Burka, Herbie Steigelman and Robbie Soronellas were selected to the ASUN All-Freshmen team with Soronellas being a unanimous pick. For their performance on the field and in the classroom, Padraic Gilley and Torian Went were named to the ASUN All-Academic team.
Estes, one of the best defenders in the league, was tabbed on the second team after anchoring a defense that leads the ASUN with the fewest goals allowed (15) and goals against average (1.04). The backline ranks 39th in the nation in GAA and helped UNF record four shutouts including three in conference play. Estes earned ASUN Defensive Player of the Week after limiting Stetson to four shots on goal and impeding one-on-one opportunities. Estes was a 2017 ASUN All-Freshman honoree.Â
Steigelman joins Estes in the backline along with Burka who was one of the two defensive center midfielders anchoring the league's best defense.
In his final season, Hawker tallied two goals and one assist en route to his first postseason accolade. He was a key play maker in the first goal against Stetson that aided UNF in beating the Hatters for the first time in three meetings. Hawker led the team in shots and is listed 15th in the ASUNÂ for shot attempts.
As a rookie, Soronellas had a team-best seven points with two goals and three assists. He helped the defense rank 39th in the NCAA in GAA (0.96). He also dished out assists at #22 FIU, FGCU and FAU to rank 6th in the conference.
In the classroom, Gilley owns a 3.65 GPA in mechanical engineering, while Went picked up his second consecutive ASUN All-Academic honor with a 3.84 in Spanish and international studies.Â
Gilley leads the ASUN with the fewest goals allowed (10) and is ranked 47th in individual GAA. The redshirt sophomore owns three shutouts including two in ASUN play. In league action, he only surrendered five goals. Gilley was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week after putting up five saves and a 0.90 GAA against USF (top 50 RPI) and FGCU.
North Florida has now had at least one player named to the ASUN All-Academic team for six straight seasons while seeing players grab ASUN All-Conference nods in seven consecutive years .
The Ospreys now turn their attention to ASUN quarterfinals action, where they play Liberty on Friday at 5 p.m., in Fort Myers, Fla.
