Griffey Rewrites Record Book Despite Loss to Liberty, 3-1

Senior Becomes the UNF DI Record Holder for Solo Blocks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Taryn Griffey surpassed 300 career kills and became the UNF Division I solo blocks record holder, although visiting Liberty (17-9, 10-4 ASUN) topped the Ospreys (14-16, 6-8 ASUN) 3-1 Sunday, Nov. 10.

North Florida remains on the cusp of an ASUN Championship berth, needing a win or a Jacksonville loss. Both teams have two conference matches remaining.

Liberty 3, UNF 1 (25-27, 10-25, 25-17, 14-25)

Inside the Sets
  • Set 1: The first set proved pivotal, as Liberty went on to win a back-and-forth battle after the session saw 15 ties and three lead changes … Liberty went on a 5-0 run for a 12-10 lead … Things looked promising for UNF later when a Solimar Cestero kill, Alessia Venturelli ace and Miriam Stingl kill put the Ospreys up, 19-16 … The Flames heated up again, tying the match up from a 21-17 deficit with four straight … The match saw four more ties before Liberty won the final two points.
  • Set 2: LU didn't hit particularly well, but UNF was held to only four kills while committing eight errors … The Flames also had seven block assists
  • Set 3: UNF got on the right side of things in the third … A 5-0 run catapulted the Ospreys to a 10-5 advantage … Liberty would get within one at 17-16, but it never tied things, as the Ospreys' .522 hitting percentage carried them.
  • Set 4: The Flames had the late legs, particularly LU outside Casey Goodwin who paced the set with seven kills … Cestero provided four kills and Griffey notched the record-setting block late in the fourth, but a .033 hitting percentage was not enough to force set five.

Leaders By the Numbers

UNF
Liberty
  • Casey Goodwin | 19 kills
  • Hannah Morris | 47 assists
  • Macy Phillips | 17 digs
  • Aspen Thompson | Five blocks

Notes
  • Griffey has 985 kills and 304 total blocks. 15 kills would make her the first UNF Division I player to notch 1,000 kills and 300 blocks. She would be the fourth in program history to do so.
  • UNF is 0-5 all-time against the Flames.
  • Askew posted her sixth double-double of the season and the second in three contests.
  • North Florida's magic number stays at one. It needs a win against either Lipscomb or North Alabama or a Jacksonville loss next weekend.

Wright's Words
"I think Liberty is a good team and if you're going to do well and get into the ASUN Championship you have to execute at this point in the season," head coach Kristen Wright said. "We have the horses to contend with anyone and I'm excited to get back to work. There are some things we have to clean up defensively and we need to consider how we are going to adjust when you can't change your lineup in a set."
