Balanced Attack Aids in Sweep of Jacksonville

UNF Posts Season-High .375 Hitting Percentage

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  - The 2018-19 chapter of the River City Rumble started off right for the Ospreys Tuesday night at the UNF Arena. Four Ospreys hit at least .400, redshirt-sophomore Gabby O'Connell and senior Madilyn McCarty narrowly missed double-doubles and UNF held Jacksonville to a .142 hitting percentage as North Florida (6-13, 1-2 ASUN) swept the Dolphins (1-15, 0-4 ASUN).

UNF 3, Jacksonville 0  (25-18, 25-21, 27-25) | Box Score

Behind the Box Score
  • A combined 10 service errors were incurred by the two teams in the first set, although UNF hit .228 points better than JU (.346 to .118) to take the opener.
  • McCarty exemplified efficiency in the first set, recording four kills on four attacks while dishing out seven assists.
  • UNF's most-efficient set of the season offensively fueled a 2-0 upper hand. The Ospreys hit .469 to overcome an early 5-1 deficit that was overturned for good when O'Connell registered a kill for the 17-16 lead.
  • Sophomore Emma Dixon provided two timely kills and a set-concluding block assist to solidify the second set.
  • UNF played catch-up again in the third before slowly getting into striking distance midway through.
  • Junior Taryn Griffey paced UNF with six kills and a .600 hitting percentage in set three. She fittingly gave the Ospreys a 21-20 lead, their first advantage of the set. JU evaded set point once but UNF sealed its fate with kills from sophomore Devyn Wheeler and Griffey.

Wright's Words
"Our middle blockers did a nice job and they hit really well tonight; they were proficient and Madilyn did a nice job as well," head coach Kristen Wright said. "That was my first River City Rumble and that staff's [Jacksonville's] first, and it was a fun environment. It's about pride and with the River City Rumble it means a little bit extra is on the line."

UNF goes on the road for two matches this weekend, beginning with Lipscomb Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Ospreys finish the weekend at Kennesaw State Sunday.
