Volleyball Overcome by Florida Atlantic in Weekend Finale

Ospreys Return to UNF Arena Tuesday

BOCA RATON, Fla. - North Florida ran into a hot Florida Atlantic team at the Owls Classic, dropping the weekend finale in three sets Saturday, September 15.

FAU 3, UNF 0 (21-25, 11-25, 20-25)
Behind the Box Score
  • Redshirt-sophomore Gabby O'Connell and senior Alana Shoff had three early blocks, helping get UNF (4-10) within one at 21-20. FAU turned a late 4-0 stretch to take the set despite UNF's .316 hitting percentage.
  • The Owls (9-3) were able to carry their late surge from the first set into set number two, hitting .538 with four aces.
  • Shoff hammered a kill to reduce FAU's lead to 20-19 in the third set, although akin to the opening set, the Owls closed the set on a 5-1 run.

Leaders by the Numbers
Other Points of Interest
  • UNF's three-match winning streak against FAU was snapped Saturday. The Ospreys are 4-8 all-time against their foes from South Florida.
  • FAU is currently on a nine-match winning streak.
  • O'Connell and Wheeler both eclipsed 100 kills this weekend, making UNF the only ASUN team having four players with over 100 kills.
  • McCarty had her six-match double-double streak snapped.
  • Wheeler and McCarty were both selected to the all-tournament team. It's McCarty's second all-tournament honor on the year, and second in two weekends.

Wright's Words
"We lost the serve and pass game," head coach Kristen Wright said. "When you do that, it's tough to convert into victories. Our passing has been a strength so we will focus on that heading into our match Tuesday. Our heart and drive to win was there in sets one and three, we were playing chase because of their serving runs."
