Ospreys Blank Lipscomb En Route to Championship
4/21/2018 10:44:00 PM | Women's Tennis
JACKSONVILLEÂ - Despite playing three hours later than originally scheduled, North Florida women's tennis came ready to play as it blanked Lipscomb, 4-0, to advance to the ASUN Championship match. It is the sixth time in seven years the Ospreys have been in the Championship, but will be the first meeting against Stetson.
QUICK HITS
-Â North Florida is seeking its fourth straight ASUN Tournament championship and its third as a No. 2 seed. UNF took down FGCUÂ last season and ETSU in 2013 to claim the title.
- The Ospreys wasted little time in doubles competition as they won 6-1 at the No. 3 spot before clinching with a 6-0 victory in No. 1.
- With the 1-0 lead, the teams had to wait for the Stetson/FGCU semifinal to finish and finally went on 45 minutes after completing doubles.
- Freshman Florencia Rossi continued her strong play from doubles and took down Kateryna Kandyba, 6-1, 6-1 for the 2-0 lead.
- Classmate Valentina Mariotto followed suit just behind with her 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
- It came down to Lucia Montano once again who clinched the match against Lipscomb in the regular season. She had no trouble doing it again.
- Montano battled with Madeline Brooks and came away with the win, 6-3, 6-4 to send UNF to the championship.
COBRA'S CORNER
"This is what we work for all year long and our girls came out ready to compete today. Lipscomb didn't make it easy, but we played our game and got the results we wanted. Now we have to come back tomorrow with the same mindset and take home another championship!" - Head Coach Mariana Cobra.
