Women's Tennis Opens Spring Slate at Home

Women's tennis hosts New Orleans, MTSU and Florida A&M to open the home weekend.

. - North Florida women's tennis jumps back into action as it hosts three matches to begin the 2018 season. UNF plays New Orleans on Friday, followed by a double-header against Middle Tennessee and Florida A&M on Saturday.

  • The Ospreys are coming off a successful 2017 campaign after finishing 15-9 overall and grabbing their third-straight ASUN tournament title to make a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Junior Rafaela Gomez recorded a team-best 23 singles win while also earning a spot on the ASUN All-Conference first team.
  • Senior Luise Intert made the ASUN All-Conference second team and achieved honors with ASUN All-Academic. Intert finished the season with an overall 19-9 singles record and 18-15 double mark.
  • Lucia Montaño finished the fall with a team-high six singles wins, while Gomez and Intert paired up for five victories in doubles.
  • Montaño and Florencia Rossi also went undefeated when they competed together in doubles with a 3-0 record.

OPPONENT NOTES
New Orleans
  • The Privateers have five players returning for the spring after finishing with a 15-9 overall record in 2017.
  • Senior Anja Luethi closed out last year with a 14-8 singles record and a 13-9 doubles mark.
  • Junior Trang Dao received recognition from the Southern Conference by earning the No.1 spot on the second team. Dao also completed the 2017 campaign with a 15-9 record in singles play.
  • New Orleans dropped its 2018 season opener to rival Tulane.
  • The Ospreys lead the series after beating the Privateers 6-1 last February. 

Middle Tennessee
  • The Blue Raiders begin the spring with a 4-0 record as they hosted four in-state teams in an opening weekend tournament.
  • Junior Costanza Magazzini racked up several achievements last year, including All-CUSA Second Team singles and ITA Scholar Athlete. Magazzini recorded an overall 20-15 singles and 22-15 doubles records.
  • Freshmen Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard are currently 3-0 in singles play.  

Florida A&M
  • In the 2017 season, the Rattlers finished with an overall record of 3-12.
  • FAMU qualified for the 2017 MEAC Championships before losing against Hampton in the first round.
  • Five freshmen join the Rattlers this season as they only return with two sophomores and one junior.
  • The Ospreys and the Rattlers last met in the 2016-2017 season, which resulted in UNF shutting out FAMU 7-0.
