JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's tennis, the three-time ASUNÂ Tournament Champions, learned it will face No. 14 South Carolina in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The match is set for Friday, May 12 in Columbia.
"We are very excited about playing South Carolina. It is a great opportunity for us because we have seen them twice this season," said head coach Mariana Cobra. "We were at their courts for three days in the fall so it's a good thing for us to be in a somewhat familiar place. Obviously playing in Columbia gives us an underdog feeling which is when we play our best. It is when we play our best and we just need to focus on the process. We need to continue to focus these next few days at practice and continue to get better."
It is the first time UNF will play South Carolina in the postseason, but the Ospreys are familiar with the Gamecocks. The South Carolina squad defeated UNF early in the 2017 season, while the teams met in the fall for a tournament in Columbia, S.C. South Carolina lost to eventual SEC Champion Vanderbilt in the semifinals, 4-3. The Gamecocks are led by Mia Horvit, an All-SEC second team and All-Freshman team honoree. Horvit finished the season with a 22-11 record in singles play, including an 11-10 record in dual-play and five wins in the No. 1 spot.
North Florida rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat top-seeded FGCU in the conference tournament to earn its third straight ASUN automatic bid and sixth in seven years. Five players earned ASUN All-Conference honors including first team selections in Michelle Valdez and Rafaela Gomez.
