Softball Takes Two on Opening Day of Spring Break Series

CLEARWATER, Fla. - North Florida started off its trip to Clearwater with a sweep of day one at the EC Moore Complex.

  • Junior Casey Estes had a standout day, going 5-for-7 with four RBI.
  • Sophomore Navia Penrod joined Estes with five hits to go along with an RBI and four runs scored.
  • Leadoff batter, Taylor Aguayo knocked five total hits as well and scored three runs.
  • In the circle for game two, freshman Morgan Blourne tossed a four-hit complete game with four walks and six strikeouts.

GAME CAPSULE
Game 1
  • A productive fourth inning and stellar pitching combined with defensive plays gave the Ospreys the opening game win.
  • UNF got out of two bases loaded situations in the first and fourth innings.
  • The Blackbirds lone run came in the form of a long ball in the third.
  • The Ospreys got things going in the fourth with back-to-back singles from Aguayo and Penrod.
  • A sac bunt moved the runners before both came around to score on Kayla McGory's single to left field.
  • Dominica Cocuzza then doubled down the left line to score McGory for a 3-1 lead.
  • Estes then brought home Cocuzza on a single up the middle before LIU ended the inning to make it a 4-1 lead.
  • Senior Logan Green allowed just three more runners to reach in the final three innings as she pitched a complete game to move to 4-8.
  • The senior pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, three walks and and eight hits.

Game 2
  • The Ospreys did not waste any time in game two as they scored two runs in the opening frame.
  • Colgate answered with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the frame when a leadoff triple came home on an attempted double steal.
  • North Florida then added three runs in the top of the third when Aguayo and Penrod put two on with lead off singles.
  • A sac fly brought Aguayo home before Estes sent a single through the left gap to score Penrod and move Cocuzza, who reached on a walk to second.
  • Senior Jen Valle sent a single just behind second base and allowed Cocuzza to score without issue for the 5-1 lead.
  • Two more runs crossed in the in the fifth inning for a 7-1 advantage before the Ospreys pushed four more in the sixth.
  • Macayla Kelley, Cocuzza, Estes and Jen Brownell all recorded an RBI single to make it run-rule to head to the bottom of the sixth.
  • Blourne struck out the first two batters of the inning before Colgate threatened with two on before a final fly out ended the game.

OUTSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Green knocked her ERA down to 2.19 for the season, while Blourne is now 6-3 on the year.
- McGory bought in a team-high four runs on her two hits for the day.
- Cocuzza and Aquayo are currently on eight-game hit streaks, while Cocuzza has reached base in 11 straight games.
