Walkoff Win! UNF Beats Kansas for First Time in Program History

JACKSONVILLE - Junior Macayla Kelley slammed a walk-off home run over the left field fence to score the game-winning run in a 10-inning marathon to beat Kansas, 8-6, for the first time in program history.

North Florida also beat Eastern Illinois, 6-2, in the Ospreys first game of the day.

Top Performers
  • Kelley was 5-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI with two stolen bases on the day to lead the team.
  • Navia Penrod tallied five hits with two stolen bases.
  • In the circle, Logan Green was a rock star tossing 13 innings with nine strikeouts and just four earned runs - all coming against Kansas.
  • Amanda Blanchard came in relief against the Jayhawks and fanned two batters and did not give up a single hit in 2.2 innings of work.

GAME CAPSULES
Game 1
  • North Florida spread a run out in the second, third and fourth inning before a three-run fifth pushed the Ospreys to victory.
  • Kayla McGory hit her first collegiate home run in the third home run. It was also the first UNF home run of the season.
  • Ashley Niesman also slammed a two-run bomb in the fifth after McGory scored on a sac bunt from Jenna Brownell
  • Eastern threatened in the fifth, but it was not enough as Logan Green struck out seven in 5.2 innings of work. Her seven fans are a season-best.
  • North Florida recorded seven hits with Macayla Kelly leading with a 2-for-3 outing
Game 2
  • Kansas failed to score in the top of the 10th as the Osprey defense sat the visitors out in order.
  • North Florida followed with Meghan Jeffery on second base and two outs on the board, Kelley stepped up to the plate and hit a 1-0 pitch over the fence to seal the game.
  • Kansas put up runs in the second and fourth for a 4-0 lead. 
  • The Ospreys then made it a game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs.
  • A Jayhawk miscue put runners on first and second with one out. Casey Estes then sent a deep double down the left line to score one.
  • Navia Penrod singled through the left side to bring in two runs and make it a 4-3 game.
  • With two outs, McGory stepped up the the plate and sent a single to center field to allow Penrod to score and tie the game. Kansas ended the inning as McGory tried to advance and was tagged out at second.
  • In the fifth, the Ospreys pushed across the go ahead run thanks to a double to the left field fence and lead 5-4.
  • The Jayhawks answered with a deep single to score in the top of the seventh and knotted the score at 5-5.
  • After nine played, the teams were tied at 6-all.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Logan Green went well over 150 pitches on the day. She earned the win in the Eastern Illinois game.
  • The 10 inning game was the first since February 7, 2015 when UNF beat FAMU, 7-6, in the Troy Tournament.
NEXT UP
North Florida gets some time to sleep in as it plays at 6 and 8:15 p.m. UNF hosts South Dakota State first followed by Georgia State.
