@OspreyBSB Closes 2016 Regular Season With Sixth-Straight Win

Box Score (PDF)
NEWARK, N.J. – North Florida (37-17, 15-6 A-Sun) completed a three-game road sweep of NJIT (17-35, 2-18 A-Sun) and closed out the 2016 regular season with a 22-2 victory in the series finale. The Ospreys finish off their regular season schedule winners of their last six games and have now won eight-straight against A-Sun opponents.

North Florida scored in all but two innings in their highest run and hit outputs of the 2016 season. The 22 runs and 26 hits each tie D-1 era single game records. A total of 12 different Ospreys recorded hits in the game, including eight multi-hit efforts.

After five runs over the first three innings, the Ospreys erupted for nine runs in the top of the fifth after sending 13 batters to the plate. It was the biggest inning of the season and was 14th time they scored five or more runs in an inning. They added seven more runs over the next four trips to the plate including four in the sixth.

Senior Nick Karmeris put together a monster afternoon going 5-for-6 with three doubles and six RBIs, all single-game career highs. He becomes the third Osprey in the last six games to match the D-1 era single game record for hits. He joins five other North Florida players in school history, including his brother Andrew, to record three or more doubles in a game.

Classmate Kyle Brooks also had a busy day on the base paths, matching Karmeris with a game-high three runs scored. The Osprey shortstop was 3-for-7 from his lead-off position with a double and a pair of RBIs. He has now reached base in 18-straight games.

Before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth, Dakota Higdon went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. In the two games of the doubleheader Higdon went 6-for-8 with three doubles and six runs scored. After the three game series, Higdon upped his season batting average 18 points to .324.

Five different Osprey pitchers limited the Highlanders to just two runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Frank German tossed three scoreless innings, allowed just three hits and struck out two. The right-hander was credited with his second win in as many starts benefiting from the predetermined pitching rotation.

Matt Vaka, Anthony Delaney and Daniel Moritz combined for four innings of scoreless relief. Vaka made his sixth relief appearance and didn't allow a hit. Delaney faced the minimum in the eighth and Moritz struck out two to close the door in the ninth.

Coming on as a defensive replacement, Redshirt sophomore Blake Voyles made the most of his opportunities at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He cracked his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning and recorded his fourth double of the year.

Second baseman Bubba Olivera matched a career-high with three hits and scored his fourth run in his last five games. Junior Alex Merritt drove in three more runs in the second game of the doubleheader and finished the day 2-for-5. He has driven in a run in his last four games.

The Ospreys will await the results of the remaining A-Sun games to determine their seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in Nashville next week. Two losses by Kennesaw State at FGCU and a loss by Jacksonville at USC Upstate can clinch a share of the Ospreys' second-straight regular season crown. No matter what the outcome of the games, the Ospreys can finish no lower than third.

The 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament is set to begin Wednesday, May 25 in Nashville, Tenn.
