JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Softball team defeated Lipscomb 4-1 and 6-5 in an A-Sun doubleheader Saturday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Ospreys (17-20, 5-3 A-Sun) move into possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun standings, ahead of Stetson by a half game, while the Bisons (20-20, 5-6 A-Sun) moves into sixth place going into tomorrow's series finale.
Game 1: North Florida 4, Lipscomb 1
The Ospreys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with senior
Shelby Duncan scoring freshman
Navia Penrod on a RBI double.
In the bottom of the third, Duncan scored Penrod again for a 2-0 lead, this time on a RBI single.
The Ospreys pushed the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, with sophomore
Ashley Niesman scoring sophomore
Casey Estes on a sacrifice fly. North Florida made the score 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when senior
Stacy McClelland scored Penrod on a RBI single.
Lipscomb managed to put one run up in the top of the sixth on an Osprey throwing error, but junior
Logan Green and the defense were able to stifle the Bisons offense. Green finished with a complete game, allowing just four hits and no earned runs.
Game 2: North Florida 6, Lipscomb 5
Lipscomb took an early 1-0 lead in the second game, scoring on a throwing error in the top of the first. The Bisons then pushed the lead to 2-0 with a RBI single in the top of the third.
The Ospreys responded in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Penrod, scoring Niesman.
North Florida took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with freshman
Jenna Brownell scoring Duncan, followed by junior
Jen Valle scoring Brownell and McClelland on a RBI triple to left field, making the score 4-2.
Lipscomb battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 5-4 lead into the final inning.
McClelland started off the bottom of the seventh with a double off of the left field wall.
After coming in to pinch run, Estes advanced to third on a Bisons wild pitch, before being scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Brownell.
Senior
Lexi Taylor moved over Brownell into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. followed by the game-winning RBI single by Niesman. Coming down to a play at the plate, Brownell was able to maneuver around the Lipscomb catcher, diving onto home plate for the walk-off win.
Next Up
The Ospreys face Lipscomb in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex, this game will also be a celebration of North Florida's 25th season of softball. The game will feature both Live Stats and a live stream on ASun.TV.
