FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast (20-21, 6-4 A-Sun) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to squeeze past the Ospreys, 4-2 in game one of a three-game road series. North Florida (26-15, 5-5 A-Sun) falls for the first time since April 12, snapping a six-game win streak.
FGCU's Tyler Selesky was a one-man offensive machine, driving in three of the four Eagle runs. His two-out double to center field in the eighth broke a 2-2 tie. He gave the Eagles the initial lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, his fifth of the season. He finished the night, 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
Junior right-hander
Bryan Baker threw 115 pitches in eight innings for his first complete game of his career. Only three of the four runs he allowed were earned and he struck out five batters while issuing one walk. Baker has fanned five or more batters in all but one start this season.
The Osprey offense failed to sustain a big rally, plating runs in the fifth and eight innings. North Florida finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when
Chris Berry doubled down the right field line, scoring
Chris Thibideau. Down a run,
Dakota Higdon drove singled up the middle in the eighth inning, scoring
Patrick Ervin and tying the game at two.
The game-tying hit spelled the end of the night for FGCU starter Brady Anderson who got a no-decision after 7.1 innings pitched and five strikeouts. The three hits in the eighth for the Ospreys were spoiled by the FGCU defense who turned an inning-ending double play to end the threat. The Eagles turned four double plays on the night including a 1-2-3 twin killing to end the game in the ninth.
Higdon, who came into the game as the Ospreys hottest hitter, went 2-for-4 and drove in his 19
th run of the season. Berry finished the night 1-for-3 and collected his third double of the season.
All but two Ospreys recorded a hit in the contest as North Florida out-hit FGCU, 8-6. It marks the fifth time this season North Florida has out-hit an opponent and lost.
Coming into the contest the Ospreys had won the previous six games, only six other teams in the country had win streaks of six or more games.
The middle game of the crucial Atlantic Sun series is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Ospreys will send right-hander
Brad Deppermann (0-0) to the hill and he will be opposed by Garrett Anderson (1-1).
