SAVANNAH, Ga. – Four runs over the first three innings aided North Florida (26-14) to a 7-3 road victory over Savannah State (9-29). The Ospreys complete the season sweep of the Tigers and have now won six-straight games.
The first inning has been the most potent frame for the Ospreys all season and Wednesday night was no different. North Florida sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning and plated three runs. Senior
Nick Karmeris brought home the first two runs on an RBI single through the right side. He later scored on
Alex Merritt's 11
th double of the season.
The Ospreys have scored 40 of their 265 runs this season in the first inning and improve to 12-2 when scoring in their first trip to the plate.
For the fourth time in the last five games North Florida received a quality start from it starting pitcher. Sophomore
Matt Vaka went six strong innings and struck out four batters to earn his third win of the season. He scattered four Tiger hits and allowed two earned runs. The right-hander cruised through the first four innings and sat down nine straight hitters from the second through fourth innings.
Senior
Kyle Brooks was responsible for the final three Osprey runs. His double in the sixth allowed Merritt and Karmeris to score. Brooks scored for the second time in the game later in the inning on a wild pitch to make the score, 7-2. Brooks went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBis.
Relievers
Adam Polansky and
Matthew Naylor preserved the Osprey lead over the final two innings. Polansky allowed a run on one hit and struck out one in two innings.
Matthew Naylor tossed a hitless ninth inning and struck out Jakeel Daniels to end the game. Naylor made his team-leading 22
nd appearance and is second on the staff with 44 strikeouts.
The Ospreys improve to 9-2 all-time against Savannah State and have now taken the last four meetings against the Tigers.
North Florida will have an eight-day layoff before continuing Atlantic Sun Conference play at FGCU on April 29.
