JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's tennis shut out Division II foe Flagler, 7-0, on a chilly Friday morning at the UNF Tennis Courts.Â
The Ospreys opened with the doubles point victory after grabbing wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Freshman Rafaela Gomez and reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Luise Intert earned a 6-2 win, while Michelle Valdez and Hanna Fluher defeated Kelly Stewart and Laura Kelly, 6-1. The No. 1 match was tied when the No. 3 match clinched the point.
In singles play, Noemi Hemmerich fought from a set down in the No. 1 position to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Valdez picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory, while Quetzali Vazquez also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. Fluhrer also recorded a win in No. 6 singles, but the other two took three sets.
In the No. 5 matchup, Gomez quickly picked up an opening set win, 6-1, but Flagler's Kelly Burge came back to tie it at 7-5. Gomez then dug deep to clinch her match with a 6-3 win in the third set.
Intert wrapped up the shut out after dropping the second set to Lizanne Jinkertz. The sophomore won 6-4, 5-7, and came back in the final set 10-5 to secure the sweep against the Saints.
The Ospreys now head out on the road for the remainder of the month beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at UCF. UNF will then have 10 days off before travling to Alabama for a two match road swing.
