Four players score in double figures in win

JACKSONVILLE - North Florida women's basketball shot a season-high 60 percent from the field as the Ospreys pushed past a slow start to down NJIT, 72-49, in the team's regular season home finale at UNF Arena on Monday evening.

Four players contributed to the hot-shooting as they scored in double figures led by the one-two punch of Claire Ioannidis and Sierra Shepherd with 16 points each. With Ioannidis' 16 points, she becomes the eighth player in school history to score 400 points in a season. With three more, she will pass Brittany Kirkland's 2010-11 total to move into seventh place in the single-season record book. The Melbourne, Australia native also needs just five more three-pointers to tie the single-season record for makes.

In addition to Shepherd's scoring, the guard grabbed five rebounds and dished out six helpers and picked up two steals. Karrah Johnson matched her career-high with 15 points and went 7-for-10 from the field with six rebounds and two assists. Senior Kadesia Johnson posted 14 points with six rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Maiya Rumph pulled down nine boards and had a career-high four assists with two blocks in her 33 minutes of play, while Hadley Kiefer record seven points off the bench.

The Ospreys shot an astounding 9-for-10 in the final quarter as they outscored the Highlanders, 23-7 and went on to shoot 27-for-45 from the floor, while hitting 10 treys on the night. On the defensive end, UNF held NJIT to just 25 percent from the floor in the second half including just two baskets in the final 10 minutes.

In the opening 20 minutes, the game saw eight lead changes and four tie scores - eventually knotting the score at 31-all heading into halftime. The Highlanders shot 54 percent in the first two periods of the game, while UNF went 46 percent from the floor.

It was in the second half of the game where North Florida found its rhythm and created distance on the scoreboard. NJIT opened the third period with back-to-back triples and Shepherd answered with one of her own, but then an 11-2 run capped by a trey from Ioannidis gave the Ospreys the advantage they held onto for the remainder of the game.

Leading by just seven after three quarters, UNF opened the final period with a 13-2 run to balloon its lead to 62-44 with 6:04 to play. The Ospreys held the visitors to just one more basket for the remaining time as the Ospreys recorded their third conference victory.

Alanda Dudley led the Highlanders with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while sister Olivia Dudley added 10 points and four helpers.
