Ospreys Conquer Conquistadors, 112-66

Final Boxscore (pdf)

JACKSONVILLE -- The North Florida men's basketball team shook off a sluggish opening 10 minutes en route to a dominating 112-66 victory over Florida National on Tuesday night at UNF Arena. The game was the opening contest for UNF in the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic.

The Ospreys (2-3) topped the century mark for the second time in three home games this season, coming up just five points shy of the program's Division I high water mark of 117 points. The scrappy FNU (2-6) squad kept things close early before watching UNF close the first half with a 24-9 surge.

Four North Florida players reached double figures led by senior Dallas Moore and freshman Wajid Aminu with 18 apiece. Aminu's total marked a career best and accompanied his personal best 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. He converted 9 of 11 field goal attempts while also collecting two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 24 minutes.

Junior Romelo Banks finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Karlos Odum netted a career high 15 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night. A trio of Ospreys narrowly missed double digits as Chris Davenport, Garrett Sams and Aaron Horne each scored nine points in the victory.

Jermonhn Queen and Terence Johnson both scored 15 points in leading Florida National.

The game was close over the opening 12 minutes of play as the team's traded the lead four times and had three ties. UNF built an eight point lead but FNU responded with eight consecutive points to knot the score at 28 with 7:49 remaining. North Florida then answered with a 13-0 spurt of their own to regain the momentum and fuel the period-closing run that gave them a 52-37 lead at the break.

North Florida opened the second half with an 18-4 run and then put the game out of reach midway through the final stanza after a 15-0 run pushed the margin to 40 points. Ten different Ospreys got into the scoring column on the night as UNF blistered the nets at a 62.5 percent clip including an 8-15 (53.3%) performance from long range. North Florida handed out 27 assists on their 45 baskets led by 8 helpers from Davenport.

Defensively, UNF held the Conquistadors to just 35 percent shooting and limited them to 5 of 24 from the three-point line. The Ospreys posted a 52-29 advantage on the glass and outscored the vistors 70-38 in the paint.

North Florida next heads to Dayton, Ohio, to continue play in the MABC Classic with three games in Wright State's Nutter Center. The Ospreys face North Dakota on Friday at 4:30 p.m. followed by a Saturday tilt with CSU Bakersfield and a Sunday clash with tournament host Wright State.

Notable
- 112 points scored marked the second highest total in UNF's Division I history
- 46-point margin of victory matches the program's Division I high and Matthew Driscoll Era
- Marks the 2nd 100+ game of the season for UNF and the 31st in program history (8th of DI era)
- Four players netted career highs in scoring: Aminu (18), Odum (15), CJ Fisher (7), Horne (9)
- Aminu collected his first career double-double with 18 pts/10 rebs
- Ospreys connected on a season best 8 treys
- Moore moved past the 1,700 career points mark (1,710), becoming just 21st player in ASUN history to surpass the mark
- UNF saw its bench account for 58 points after scoring just 12 points against LSU last Friday night

Quotable...
"It was great to see the guys respond after such a sluggish start. I thought we settled down and started to share the ball and had great movement. When we defend and get stops, it really frees us up on the offensive end. It was nice to see us take and make good shots. I don't understand why we are struggling from the free throw line because we have some really good shooters, so that's something we have to get figured out because it will come back to hurt us. I was extremely happy for our bench tonight. It was nice to see those guys get in the game and perform well with lights on because we are going to need them to be successful this year. I felt like Karlos Odum and Aaron Horne were good for us tonight." -- Head Coach Matthew Driscoll
