JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - FGCU hit 13 three-pointers as the Eagles defeated North Florida women's basketball, 65-38, at UNF Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Claire Ioannidis led the team in scoring for the 11th time this season with 14 points with three rebounds and three assists with just one turnover on the day. Senior
Kadesia Johnson missed a double-double by one board with 10 points and nine rebounds. It was her sixth time scoring double-figure totals this season and 13th time leading the team off the glass.
Four different players had seven or more rebounds to help UNF (6-14) hold a small 42-41 edge off the boards. The Ospreys had 11 second chance points on 11 offensive rebounds. Freshman
Katie Meckus pulled down a career-best eight rebounds to go with two points, one block and one steal in 14 minutes off the bench.
UNF opened the scoring on a 5-0 run before FGCU (18-4) hit three-straight triples to take the lead for the remainder of the game. The Ospreys got as close as two again with a lay up from Johnson, but a traditional three-point play followed by another triple from leading scorer Taylor Gradinjan pushed the game out of the Ospreys reach.
In the second quarter, both teams struggled to find the basket as both teams came up empty for more than three minutes. A three-pointer from Katie Meador finally broke the drought at 6:06. The Eagles held UNF to just two baskets, while FGCU knocked down four including three from long range to lead 30-14 at the break.
FGCU started the second half on a 20-3 tear with the Osprey lone basket coming from an Ioannidis three-pointer. FGCU took its biggest lead of the game, 50-17 on a traditional three-point play from DyTiesha Dunson. Dunson finished with 14 points and four assists for the Eagles.
For the second straight game, the Ospreys struggled from long range, hitting just two triples. Against USC Upstate, the Ospreys found the basket just three times from behind the arc. As a team, UNF shot 29 percent on 16-of-54. FGCU shot below its season average with a 35 percent clip on 24-for-67 from the field.
North Florida now has four days to prepare for Stetson as it begins the second half of conference play. The Ospreys play in DeLand, Fla. on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
