NEWARK, N.J. - Junior
Claire Ioannidis dropped 25 points at NJIT to help give North Florida women's basketball back-to-back conference victories for the first time since 2013 with a 68-51 victory at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
UNF moves to 6-13 on the season and 2-2 in Atlantic Sun action. NJIT is now 3-16 and still searching for a conference victory. The Ospreys now travel to USC Upstate to face the Spartans on Monday at 7 p.m.
Ioannidis was hot from long range as she went 6-for-10 from behind the arc to tie six others for three-pointers made in a game. The Melbourne, Australia native grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists on her way to her sixth 20-point game. Sophomore
Sierra Shepherd and senior
Kadesia Johnson recorded 12 points and four assists each, while Johnson topped the team in rebounding with seven.
It was a slow start for the Ospreys who did not score their first field goal until midway through the opening quarter. The two teams traded baskets through the final five minutes and a three-pointer from
Taru Madekivi with 23 seconds on the clock gave UNF a 13-11 lead after the first frame.
In the second quarter, NJIT outscored North Florida by one in the second quarter as the teams had almost identical stats for a 32-31 halftime score. The Highlanders' Kelly Guarino scored 13 of her 19 total points in the second frame.
NJIT jumped back out front in the third period with a triple and layup for a 36-32 lead with 8:31 to play. Back-to-back three-pointers from Ioannidis and a basket from
Karrah Johnson put the visitors out front where they would stay for the remainder of the game. The hosts got within one at 40-39, but it was as close as NJIT would get for the rest of the game.
Ioannidis hit 12 of her 25 points in the final 10 minutes, while
Kadesia Johnson recorded six. UNF took its double-digit win on a free throw from
Kadesia Johnson with 3:21 to play. The Ospreys held NJIT to just one basket in the final nine minutes of play to take home their second straight conference victory.
UNF went 48 percent from the floor on 24-of-50 shooting, while hitting 12-of-27 from long range. For the second straight game, the Ospreys held their opponent to a season low in rebounds as UNF owned a 35-21 margin off the glass.
Karrah Johnson grabbed six boards, while
Maiya Rumph pulled down five and each one recorded a block along with freshman
Katie Meckus.
Leah Horton joined Guarino in double figures with 14 points. The Highlanders shot 39 percent from the field and just 28 percent from long range.
With the game moving up a day, UNF now has an extra day to prepare for the Spartans as it battles Storm Jonas to get back towards the south.
