JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- The North Florida women's track and field team ended the first day of competition in the Atlantic Sun Championships in fourth place following a pair of gold medal performances from Meg Simon and Eden Meyer.
UNF pole vaulters Simon and Megan Walker got the scoring started after finishing first and third, respectively. Simon posted a personal record vault of 3.81m (12'6") while Walker turned in a near season best mark of 3.71m (12'2").
The Ospreys than saw a pair of runners score in the 3,000m steeplechase led by senior Elle Baker's third-place finish in a time of 10:41.11. Kelly Hensley collected a personal best time of 11:20.77 to finish sixth in the event.
Senior sprinter Vernetia Irving raced to a near season best time of 12.12 in the 100m to advance to Saturday's final heat of the event.
North Florida ended the night strong as Meyer led a trio of scoring performances in the 10,000m. Meyer, a standout this season for UNF in both cross country and indoor track, claimed the event crown after posting the second fastest time in A-Sun Championship history with a time of 35:12.29. She was joined in the scoring column by teammates Lauren Gonzalez in fourth with a personal best of 37:22.18 and Christina McKinney in eighth at 38:29.73.
"We got a great start to the meet with Meg Simon winning the pole vault and defending indoor champion Megan Walker finishing third in the event," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "I feel like that really got the team off on the right foot. Elle ran a great race to finish third in the steeplechase and it was also nice to see Kelly run well and finish sixth. The 10k was just a really good race for us, I was proud of how Eden ran against some good runners. Lauren also made a nice step by bettering her PR by over a minute and having Christina place eighth in the first 10k of her career was a nice scoring event for the team."
The Atlantic Sun Championship concludes with second day action on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the multi-event competition. Field events resume at 3 p.m., while running events are set to begin at 5 p.m.
