FORT MYERS, Fla. – The last Atlantic Sun Conference match of the regular season takes place for University of North Florida women's tennis at Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 10 a.m., at the FGCU Tennis Complex. It will also be a showdown between the two teams who are still undefeated in Atlantic Sun play.
"This is the time of the year when the girls have to trust that all of their hard work and training that we have put into creating this team of offense, proactive, confident and mentally tough tennis players is going to help us persevere in the last crucial weeks of the season," said head coach
Audra Cohen. "My hope is that our seniors, who have observed this many times before, will help the younger players to trust in that process as well and be excited for the challenges that lie ahead."
With a win tomorrow, UNF can clinch its third Atlantic Sun Regular Season title under Cohen and lock up the No. 1 seed for the Atlantic Sun Tournament that is Apr. 17-19. Additionally, a win will be Cohen's 30th Atlantic Sun win in four years and the third time she's guided the Ospreys to an undefeated conference season.
However, if Florida Gulf Coast wins Saturday's match, the Ospreys will have to wait the outcome of next Saturday's match between Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Saturday's match caps a challenging week for the Ospreys. UNF posted a 4-3 win over Stetson on Thursday. The Hatters had entered the match undefeated in conference play. With the score tied at 3-3,
Quetzali Vazquez had the match-winning point at No. 4 singles, rallying for a three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory against Carolina Meregalli. The Ospreys have only had two other matches be decided by one point so far this season, edging out both UCF (Feb. 18) and USF (Mar. 7) by 4-3 scores.
Florida Gulf Coast has won its last five matches in order to come into Saturday with a 7-9 overall record and 4-0 in the Atlantic Sun. The Eagles, who are in the midst of a five-match homestand, come off a 6-1 win over UTSA last Sunday. In singles, Florida Gulf Coast has played strong at both No. 3 and No. 4 singles, tallying 10-5 and 12-4 marks on those courts, respectively. Johanna Sterkel has led the charge for the Eagles with a 12-3 singles mark. She is one of three Eagles on a five-match winning streak. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Means has won her last six matches and is 5-0 at No. 5 singles. In doubles, Elizabeth Means has teamed with her sister Sarah Means for a 7-3 mark on the No. 1 court.
