Women Open Outdoor Season With Solid Performances

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida women's track and field team got strong performances throughout their lineup highlighted by several event titles in the middle distances at the outdoor season opening UNF Spring Break Invitational at Hodges Stadium.
Senior Elle Baker ran one of the best times in the East Region this season in the 3,000m steeplechase claiming the event title with a time of 10:30.86. In the 800m, Vanessa Philbert finished first at 2:11.11 and teammate Dagmar Olsen was third at 2:14.45. Alessandra Valdes captured the title in the 1,500m after racing to a time of 4;35.08, while Lauren Gonzalez was the runner-up in the 5,000m with a time of 17:51.18.
In the field events, Megan Walker was the winner of the pole vault posting a mark of 3.65m (11'11.75") with teammate Meg Simon in third with a vault of 3.50m (11'5.75"). In the high jump, Alyssa Young was the runner-up with a jump of 1.68m (5'6").
"I'm very proud of the performances the women gave this weekend," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "It was great to have the chance to compete at home. Our adminstrative staff does a great job of hosting events and this weekend was just another example of that. Elle really helped lead a strong showing from our middle distance group. We can definitely build from this as we continue the outdoor season."
North Florida next competes Apr. 3-4 at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
