Box Score Boxscore JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 69 University of North Florida men's tennis fought back to edge USC Upstate 4-3 on a sunny and breezy Saturday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. With the win, the Ospreys clinch a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament that takes place Apr. 17-19 at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"We played with a lot of heart today and came away with a win that should help this team moving forward," said head coach
Mark Finnegan. "We were disappointed that our 15-match doubles win streak was snapped, but it was great for the guys to see that we can come back and win four singles matches."
UNF found itself trailing USC Upstate 1-0 after the completion of doubles play. Despite the Ospreys winning the first finished doubles match, the Spartans came back to take the last two to earn the point.
Zach Goldberg and
Lasse Muscheites claimed an 8-2 win over Viktor Selander and Felix Ewers on the No. 2 court. However, Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion quickly erased any UNF doubles point advantage by defeating
Julian Bradley and
Alberto De Meo on the No. 3 court.
Norbert Nemcsek and
Yannick Zuern attempted to come back at No. 1 doubles, trailing at one point 7-3 before making it a 7-6 match, but Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates held on for a doubles-point clinching 8-2 victory.
All of the singles matches were played close, including five of the six courts being 7-5 decisions in the first set.
De Meo's 7-5, 6-4 No. 6 singles win over Ewers was the first completed singles match and allowed UNF to even the match score at 1-1. However, USC Upstate quickly gained a one-point lead, going up 2-1 with Garrido's 7-5, 6-2 victory against Muscheites at the No. 4 spot. UNF tied the match once again, using
Zach Goldberg's 7-5, 6-3 No. 5 singles triumph over Bennion to deadlock the match at 2-2.
UNF ultimately score the last two points it needed within minutes of each over. Bradley fended off Yates 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Zuern quickly followed, rallying for a three-set 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Selander at No. 2 singles and providing UNF with the match-winning point.
USC Upstate finished the match with Simonetti defeating Nemcsek 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
UNF returns to action on Thursday with a critical Atlantic Sun match against Stetson. Match time is set for 4 p.m., at the UNF Tennis Complex. The match is being billed as Fraternity and Sorority day. $1 beer will be available for those fans ages 21-and-up. Admission is free for all UNF home matches.
