@OspreyBSB Captures Mayor’s Cup, Wins Ninth-Straight Game

Box Score (PDF)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the first edition the Jacksonville Mayor's Cup, the red-hot Ospreys hung on for a 3-2 victory over cross-town rival Jacksonville University (9-11) at John Sessions Stadium. North Florida (15-8) has now won nine consecutive games, a new program, D-I era record.

The Ospreys scored a run in each of their first three turns at the plate and that proved to be all they needed to secure their 15th win of the year. Junior Corbin Olmstead worked around three hits and an Osprey error to secure his second save of the season. An unearned run crossed in the bottom of the eighth to narrow the North Florida lead to one. He struck out the final batter in the eighth and was able to strand two runners in the bottom of the ninth for the six-out save.

Olmstead has yet to yield an earned run in 15 innings pitched this season. The save today was the eighth of his career which ties him with Josh Papelbon for the 2nd most in the school's Division I era.

Red-shirt sophomore Donnie Dewees got the Osprey offense going in just the second at bat of the game. He sent a second-pitch fastball clear over the right field wall for his fifth home run of the season and gave the visiting Ospreys an early, 1-0 advantage.

North Florida added to the lead in their next two turns at the plate. In the top of the second, Patrick Ervin singled home Nick Karmeris for the game's second run. Karmeris reached earlier in the frame on his first career triple. An inning later, Keith Skinner drove in his 14th run of the season, scoring Dewees who reached on a hit by pitch and then stole second.

Making his fourth start of the year, Matt Vaka kept the Dolphins scoreless over 4.2 innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed four hits and struck out a batter but did not factor in the decision. Sophomore Matthew Naylor came on in relief and pitched 2.1 innings for his third win of the season.

Dewees was 1-for-2 with two runs scored an RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 16 games and stole his league-leading 12th base.

The Ospreys will return home on Friday to host a three-game series against Bradley. The series opener is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and will also be the second "Harmon Happy Hour" of the season where all beer is just $1 for fans 21 & over. The series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
