NEWARK, N.J. – The North Florida volleyball team earned a season sweep over Atlantic Sun newcomer NJIT following a dominating 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-8) victory over the Highlanders, Friday night at the Fleisher Center.
The Ospreys (19-9, 5-6 Atlantic Sun) hit .276 as a team for the match while limiting NJIT (6-22, 1-10) to just a .056 performance. Carina Hoff led UNF with nine kills followed by eight from Katarina Raicevic. Hoff also paced the squad with an impressive .615 hitting percentage, committing just one error in 13 attempts.
Defensively, Erin Edwards was the top performer finishing with a team best six blocks (2 solos, 4 assists), while Ashley LaBorde collected nine digs and Ambre Desaulnay chipped in eight.
The first set featured a back-and-forth battle between the squads with neither team holding more than a three-point lead. The Ospreys broke things open with a 9-4 run midway through the frame to build a 20-14 advantage, and then closed out the set for the early match lead.
The Highlanders got out of the gates quickly in set two only to see the Ospreys rally with an 8-3 spurt to grab their first lead of the stanza, 12-9. NJIT answered with five straight points to regain a lead they would maintain until a late 9-1 surge by UNF pushed the score to set point, 24-19. NJIT trimmed the deficit before the Ospreys notched the deciding point and a 2-0 lead in the match.
UNF scored the first three points of set three and the closed out the match using a decisive 18-3 run for a 25-8 victory. The 17-point margin was the team's second largest victory margin of the season having topped Alabama A&M, 25-7, in August.
North Florida catches a flight on Saturday morning to Nashville as the Ospreys will play at Lipscomb, Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, in the final regular season road match of the year.
