Owls Walk-Off With Sweep in Regular Season Finale

Box Score (PDF)
KENNESAW, Ga.- For the second day in a row, Kennesaw State won in its final at bat and defeated North Florida, 1-0 in ten innings. Matt Bahnick provided the game's only run with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the tenth.

The home run by Bahnick was his third of the year and helped the Owls finish the regular season with a 33-21 overall record and a 17-9 mark in Atlantic Sun play. Bahnick accounted for three of the Owls six hits on the afternoon. Kennesaw will be the three seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

The top two offensive teams in the Atlantic Sun were kept in check for the majority of the afternoon. The Ospreys and Owls combined for 12 hits. All three games of the series were decided by one run and the Ospreys fall to 3-2 in extra-inning games this season.

The lone run spoiled a terrific day for the Osprey pitching staff that surrendered just six hits and did not walk a batter. Evan Incinelli got the start for North Florida and pitched the first three scoreless innings. He struck out two batters and gave way to Bryan Baker in the fourth. Baker was equally as impressive pitching three scoreless innings and struck out three. Dan VanSickle, Jordan Nolan and Tyler DuPont each contributed a scoreless inning of relief.

Three Owl pitchers combined for the shutout including the starter Gabe Friese. The righty pitched six solid innings and struck out two batters. Five of the Ospreys six hits came off of Friese. Nathan Harsh threw the seventh, eighth and ninth, allowing only three runners. James Connell pitched the 10th and was credited with his fifth win of 2014.

Perhaps the best opportunity for North Florida to score was taken away by left fielder Jacob Bruce. In the top of the sixth, junior Trent Higginbothem drove a 2-2 pitch that cleared the left field wall but Bruce brought it back into play and a spectacular leaping grab.

Junior Drew Weeks tied the school record for hits in a season in the contest in the top of the first inning. His single to right field was the 93rd hit of the season which tied Preston Hale for the school mark. He finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk.

Freshman Patrick Ervin had two hits on the day, finishing 2-for-5. The multiple effort was his 17th of the season, moving his batting average to .331.

The Ospreys will be the eighth seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament and will play Florida Gulf Coast at 5:00 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla. The complete schedule for the double-eliminations tournament to determine the conference's representative in the NCAA Tournament can be found HERE.
