Box Score (PDF)KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State took the first game of a crucial Atlantic Sun series by a score of 3-2 at Stillwell Stadium this evening. The Ospreys scored two runs in the seventh but were unable to come up with the equalizer over the final two at bats.
The Ospreys fall to 22-27 on the season and 11-14 in Atlantic Sun play. Kennesaw State, who recently snapped a Division I best 16-game win streak on Wednesday, improve to 31-21 overall and 15-9 against conference opponents.
The Owl bullpen was able to shut the door for starter Jordan Hillyer who threw six innings for his seventh win of the season. James Connell and Justin McCalvin each three scoreless innings to hold the one-run lead. McCalvin earned his league-leading 12
th save of season.
Osprey starting pitcher
David Trexler pitched well despite taking his third loss of the year. He went six innings and allowed only two earned runs. He scattered nine hits and struck out his 53
rd batter of the season. Reliever
Tyler DuPont came on in relief and pitched two perfect innings, recording three fly outs and three ground outs.
Kennesaw kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the third after both teams left runners on in their first two turns at the plate. Jacob Bruce reached on a one-out error and scored the game's first run on an RBI single Bo Way, giving the home team the early, 1-0 advantage.
The Owls strung together three-straight hits to start the bottom of the sixth and plated the second run of the game on a RBI single by Chris McGowan. Two batters later Brennan Morgan beat out a double play attempt by the Ospreys, plating the second run of the inning.
The seventh inning, which has been a high-scoring frame for the Ospreys all season long, got the Ospreys back in the ball game. With runners on second and third,
Kyle Brooks flew a ball to deep right field that was caught but was able to score
Peyton Walsh for the sacrifice fly. Two wild pitches moved a pair of runners in scoring position and scored the speedy
Garrick Ferguson to pull the Ospreys within a run.
In the battle of the Atlantic Sun's top hitters, Owls catcher Max Pentecost got out to a quick head start on Osprey right fielder
Drew Weeks with two hits and a run scored.
Trent Higginbothem put together his 20
th multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 on the evening. Brooks,
Patrick Ervin, Walsh and
Alex Bacon each had a hit in the contest for North Florida.
Game two of the three game series will be played tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. Junior
Nick Miller (1-2) will get the start on the mound for the Ospreys. He will be opposed by lefthander Travis Bergen (6-4) for the Owls.
