Spartans Outlast Ospreys in Tight Game

Boxscore

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of North Florida baseball team took its first lead of the ballgame in the top of the ninth, but saw USC Upstate rally in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 victory at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C. on the final day of the 2013 regular season. The Ospreys (38-17, 18-9 Atlantic Sun), who claimed the series with the Spartans (26-28, 9-18 A-Sun), will now head to the A-Sun Tournament in DeLand, Fla., beginning on Wednesday, May 22.

Despite both teams recording double-digit hits on the day, the game was a pitcher's duel throughout. Starting pitcher Michael Renner worked 6.2 innings, scattering 10 hits in a no decision. He allowed two runs with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Corbin Olmstead took the hard-luck loss for the Ospreys. The freshman surrendered three hits in 1.2 innings, allowing two runs. He walked three batters, including an intentional walk.

For USC Upstate, the duo of Gaither Bumgardner and Chad Sobotka combined to allow three runs on 11 hits. The duo walked one and struck out six. Bumgardner earned a no-decision as the Ospreys took the lead in the ninth inning, while Sobotka was the pitcher of record.

Offensively for North Florida, the Ospreys collected 11 hits on the day, but struggled to find the clutch hit, stranding nine batters on base. Ever starter in the UNF lineup recorded at least one hit with Kyle Brooks and Corey Bass each notching a pair of hits. Drew Weeks hit a home run in the game, while Paul Karmeris and Brooks each added doubles to provide the Ospreys' power production. P. Karmeris led the team with two RBI in the contest.

USC Upstate took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Upstate's Luke Weber lifted a pitch over the left field wall to put the Spartans in front 1-0.

North Florida scratched the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Drew Weeks knotted the score with one swing as the sophomore hit his team-leading eighth home run. The solo shot to left center field tied the game at 1-1.

The Spartans regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Upstate led off the inning with a single to center field and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Bumgardner produced a RBI single to right field to help his own cause and give the home team a 2-1 edge.

The Ospreys rallied in the top of the ninth inning. Down to their final out, Spencer Herrmann singled through the left side of the infield. Garrick Ferguson pinch ran for Herrmann and promptly stole second base to move into scoring position. Joe Wielbruda worked the count full before he was hit by a pitch to give UNF a pair of base runners. With the Ospreys down to their final out, P. Karmeris doubled down the left field line, scoring Ferguson and Wielbruda and giving North Florida its first lead of the game.

USC Upstate started the ninth inning with a single through the left side of the infield followed by a single to right center field. The two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. The Ospreys intentionally walked the next batter to set up a force at every base. The next batter worked the count full before drawing a RBI walk to tie the game. With the bases loaded, the Spartans claimed the victory with a walk-off single through the right side of the infield.

North Florida now turns its attention to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla. The Ospreys will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will play either Kennesaw State or Lipscomb, pending the outcome of that series. Live stats, live video, live audio and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will be available throughout the entire A-Sun Tournament.
