Long Ball Lifts Ospreys Over Spartans

Boxscore

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of North Florida's Tyler Marincov and Ryan Roberson combined for three home runs as the Ospreys (38-16, 18-8 A-Sun) recorded a 6-2 victory over USC Upstate (25-28, 8-18 A-Sun) on Friday night to claim the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series.

Marincov finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI while, Roberson notched a 2-for-4 performance with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored. The duo accounted for four of the Ospreys' eight hits on the night and three of the four extra-base hits. Donnie Dewees added a double for North Florida on the night.

On the mound, the Ospreys received a solid performance from starter Nick Allbritton. The senior allowed two runs on nine hits in 7.2 innings of work, earning his fifth victory of the season. Allbritton walked just one while striking out five. He gave way to fellow senior Kyle Westwood. The hurler fanned two batters in 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just a pair of hits.

North Florida started the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. Joe Wielbruda led off the inning with a single to shallow center field. With one out, Tyler Marincov put the Ospreys on the scoreboard with a two-run home run to straight away center field over the 30-foot batter's eye at the 402-foot mark of the wall. Ryan Roberson pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-out solo home run to left field.

USC Upstate trimmed the lead to just one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, the Spartans used an infield single to third base and a single to shallow left field to place runners on first and second. A second infield single loaded the bases with just one out. Allbritton struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning, but a two-RBI single cut the lead to 3-2. Allbritton ended the inning without allowing another run as he induced a ground ball to third.

The Ospreys got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Marincov hit his second home run of the game – a solo shot to left field. For Marincov, it was the second multi-home run game of his career. His first came on against former A-Sun opponent Belmont on March 27, 2011. The two-homer performance tied Roberson's multi-homer effort earlier this season against Northern Kentucky on April 12 for the most long balls in a game this season.

UNF added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Marincov walked. Dewees reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, the Upstate's shortstop threw the ball away trying to erase Marincov, allowing the junior to advance to third. Roberson drove home Marincov with a RBI single up the middle. On the play, Dewees advanced to third. Drew Weeks singled up the middle to score Dewees and push the lead to 6-2.

The Ospreys closed the door on any potential comeback as Westwood posted two strikeouts in the final inning to secure the victory.

North Florida and USC Upstate will conclude the series on Saturday afternoon. The game time has been changed to 12:00 p.m. (NOON) in an attempt to avoid inclement weather expected in the Spartanburg, S.C. area. Live stats and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will be available throughout the game.
